Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

What's the best place to buy a reliable Serial Ultrabay Slim hard drive caddy for a T400?

I don't give a shit if it's a ching chong special, I just need something that isn't a piece of shit. I've read that a lot of the ones from Hong Kong don't even have latches so the only thing keeping the caddy in the ultrabay is the resistance from the SATA/power connectors on the drive.

There's really nothing to worry about as long as your thoroughly read the item description and the seller has really good ratings/is reputable.

Oops, left my trip on.

Is 403 dollars a good price for a used but refurbished T420? It apparently comes with win 7 pro and ms office.

I've been looking at used thinkpads, I love how they look and the reliability. Coming from a HP computer that has had countless issues I'd relish the chance to have a computer that works and that you can maintain without disassembling the entire thing. A T420 seems to fulfill those needs. What does /g/ think? I'm intending to use it for surfing the web, writing, very light gaming and movies.
Here's the product page http://www.kvalitetsdatorer.se/se/art/lenovo-thinkpad-t420-14-hd-led-4gb-ram-128gb-ssd.php

Dunno about anyone else or any absolute objective best setting, but after getting my first and only Thinkpad last year and deciding to pop my cherry on its trackpoint, given that I need mouse accel disabled for games, I have that at windows 6/11, and the trackpoint sens is 5/9, which I believe is default, as it's neutral.

at first you feel you're cockblocking yourself by having to wait nearly a second sometimes to move your cursor from one extreme side of the screen to the other, but it's comfy. it's mindless, and comfy. much comfier than a touchpad. but it's not like I've broken down what must be the best settings, or anything. after maxing it I got tired and put it back at default, and I'm still here, at default

E6400 Guy, what's so special about your particular model when compared to newer latitudes? For example in ThinkPads we have T60/T61 for 4:3 fans, T400-T410 for 16:10, T420 for the old layout, like each model has it's advantages and I wanted to know if such a thing exists in latitudes

The older E6400 has very similar advantages to thinkpads of the same time, 16:10, basically a fullsize keyboard in a laptop and such.

Consensus on Dell Precision line? I currently have a T420 that is starting to feel antiquated and was considering an M4800. I got to play with one at my local Microcenter and it seems to be soms serious build quality and yhe heat dissipation is on par as well for the Nvidia quadro and 8 thread i7-4820mq.

I'd be looking at $1600 for
>I7-4820mq
>16gb ddr3 1600mhz

Didnt even see that Dell launched the Precision series with 6th gen cpus. Customizing one 7510 with an i7-6820hq, AMD firepro, and 16gb ddr4 2133mhz is just shy of $1600 from their site.

How is Dell business laptops compared to current day Lenovo? Everyone seems to swear modern Lenovo stuff is trash.

Would it be worth the extra $70 to get a Nvidia Quadro 1000m over the firepro? Which has better Linux compatibility?

M4800 owner here.

It's likely that you'll get a better P50 for $1600 thanks to the insanely good EPP discount. It'll also have a better keyboard than the Dell.

However, the 7510 does come with a better battery option (rated to 1000 cycles) and 3 year NBD onsite warranty as standard, plus the lack of whitelisting on the wireless cards.

>Also, why Linux? These are CAD machines, Autodesk/Adobe don't exist on linux, if you're just gonna use it to shitpost/gayme/lightstuff don't look their way

Looking for a machine with greta build quality and an 8 thread CPU because although I intend to do everything you listed, my classes are starting to require multiple VMs to be open at once. Hence why I dont need dedicated gtaphica chipset and would be fine with just intel HD. There doesn't seem to be any laptops in the market with the build quality of these CAD machines, but no dedicated GPU.

Other than something from Sager. But at their price point for no dedicated gpu, $200 more would get me something along the lines of a gtx960/970m inside the same laptop. I use Linux because it serves all my needs and plays nice with my Linux server and other machines in my home. Dont get me wrong though, I intend to dual boot if god forbid my class requires a Windows centric program I dont have to scramble for a suitable Linux version.

Last thing I was considering was getting an i7-2630qm for my T420 but as it sits, my 4 thread i7 hits 80C when under 100% load let alone an 8 thread. Plus the niceties of m.2 ssds, usb 3.0, 1080p screen, etc.

why is this new checlet keyboard so shit?
Literally can't find a new notebook with normal keyboard but only this 'sinked into yur laptop' shit.

The last keyboard was on the 420 series.

I was looking trough the notebooks today in the shop. Lenovo Ideapad 100 and some Fujitsu Lifebook with same specs, but it was made from such a weak plastic. I was afraid I might break it if I press the cd-tray down too hard. I swear they make these things from UV weak plastic so something will die in it after 3-4 years when they warranty ends.
Saw a Thinpad E560 model with a slightly better plastic case. But it is still shit compared to the T series.

Can I replace my 1024X768 Thinkpad T60 screen with a higher resolution screen? Some T60s came with a bigger resolution, and I think all T61s use 1280x1024 resolution.

Can I just buy a better screen from ebay and install it on my thinkpad? Will it work?

I'm seriously considering using this old beast over my newer laptop but the poor resolution makes it less useable. I just fucking love the design and apart form the screen, everything about it. It's old, but with Arch, a light wm and an SSD it's so useable.
>>
>>53545429
Don't think it's likely to happen. Unless you find one of the 1400x1050 screens which is the same size. Anything higher and it's almost a full inch bigger than the bezel.

Yes, it really is just a panel swap. You have to be careful though and make sure you're getting the right panel for your T60. Obviously if you go and buy a 15" panel and you have a 14" model, it's not gonna work. Use Lelnovo's site to check FRUs for the screen you want. If you've got a 15" T60, you're in luck. You can upgrade up to 1600x1200 IPS, but good luck finding a genuine one for any reasonable price. 1400x1050 IPS or compatible TN 1600x1200 screens are more readily available if you're willing to compromise. I went with the latter and I can't say I'm disappointed. It's not any worse than the stock 1024x768 was.

If you've got a 14" model, your upgrade is a bit less impressive. 1400x1050 TN is the best you can do, but that'll still go a long way towards improving usability.

You should also look into the T601F Frankenpad project. It's a bit more than your average babby's first screwdriver upgrade, but it's well worth the effort. A word of advice if you go for it: don't bother with Nvidia boards. Besides the well-known timebomb issue, the GPU runs hot as fuck, kills your battery life, and my Linux experience with it was nothing but shit. I swapped it for an Intel board and got an Advanced Dock with an R7 240 to suit my graphix demands instead and couldn't be happier. This baby outperforms my Nvidia T420 in all but the most CPU-intensive vidya I've got.

How do I save battery on Linux? On Windows I could spend like 4 hours on aegisub and still have 25% to spare, but on Linux with tlp and powertop I still can't make it past 4 and a half hours.

>>
>>53545920

Thanks. I've got the 14" one. 1400x1050 is still good. It doesn't need to have superb contrast or anything, I'm not picky like that. I just want more text to fit in my screen.

The t440 isn't going to have any noticeable performance increase for what youre doing. If you want a step up, you should consider a t520 for the 1920x1080 screen. You could get one for 200-250, most of which you would recoup by selling your t420.

Whats the general consensus on the yogas, besides
>Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES
Obviously, it's going to be less robust than the equivalent T-series, but then on the other hand, a T450s would cost me 1000€, whereas a Yoga14 runs at around 500€, and according to various reviews, those are
>business ultrabooks!!!!
>business tablets!!!!
>typical thinkpad look that you consumers love to hate!!!!!
>typical thinkpad robustness and keyboards!!!!!
which sounds kinda ok.

Reason I am asking, besides 500€ cheaper, is the following:
I'm working with a lot of scientific articles, and those are all portrait A4, with small letters and two columns. So reading them on a landscape monitor totally sucks, because you constantly have to scroll back and forth.
And reading them on a small, tablet only tablet, also sucks, because you still have to scroll back and forth.
But on a 14" tablet, that seems workable! Especially when you have a pen, for annotating them. But do you actually have a pen?
Some Yogas seem to have one, some dont? The one I am looking at, the seller says the display supports a pen, but there is none in the box. So what is it? And amazon is full of thinkpad pens, where the reviews are 50% folks saying "works fine, other idiots cant read!", and 50% folks saying "0 stars, doesnt work", but non of the fucking pens says which models (the full number, not just "thinkpad yoga" they are meant to be used with).
Also, can I stuff 16GB of ram into one slot, or will the bios not accept it?

Get the Yoga, they aren't that bad.

I liked the Yoga 11e, despite it not having a trackpoint it was a much better device than the X140e and they were at the same price point.

Twist was another story (S230u), it was an underperformer with its underclocked 3rd gen i5...

Get a Yoga with a digitizer slot, otherwise they aren't made for that shit.

Also careful on buying an ideapad yoga and thinkpad yoga, though both are similar one will be a bit thicker.

I like the P40 Yoga but I am not sure if it will be my replacement for my X61T...

By digitizer slot you mean a slot for the pen in the body? So that are the 12" ones exclusively?
Just got a mail back from the seller, and the machine I wanted does indeed not have a digitizer. But why would anyone want a table that is not an ios/android toy without a pen?
Oh well, back to waiting for the T450s prices to drop below the edu prices for the T460s, or waiting for linux compatibility for the T460s

Not all T61ps are 4:3, some are widescreen.

T60p is housefire GPU.

You can mitigate this with power saving mode on XP/Win7 (with modded CCC install) which halves the GPU clock speed. I don't think this is possible under Linux but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Underclocking with either RMClock or PHC is also a boon in Windows and Linux, respectively. It reduces the load on the cooling system as a whole and improves battery life.

You're right of course that the difference between the two is negligible in the real-world light mobile computing application of either.

The feel. It's terrible to write. So much typos all the time.

Maybe you get used to it.

Sounds like you got a worn out keyboard, every TP keyboard feels like shit if it's heavily used

That's about it?

The i5 models don't have USB 3?

Well, that might actually be a deal breaker then.

Will this work on a thinkpad t420? I'm a click away from buying.

Yeah it'll work, it's standard spec DDR3 SO-DIMMs.

How easy/expensive is it to upgrade to an i7 from an i5. For a T520.

How suitable is the T420 for tibetan amphibian analysis animations? Although I'm primarily intending to use it as an htpc, I would also like for the display to be at least decent enough for my degenerate cartoons during the rare occasions where I stumble out of my NEET hovel into the menacing outdoors.

I'm in the market x220 Tablet. (possibly none tablet)
I'm curious if there is a significant difference between the i7 and i5 concerning power, heat and power consumption.
Also I would love to hear any opinions on Tablet or no. OG has more battery life, but part of my uses for this machine is note taking involving lots of diagrams and DMing, so the touch screen has its uses for me.
Also, according to the Lenovo datasheets, only the Tablet has Bluetooth? Can anyone verify that?
