Malware means software designed to function in ways that mistreat or harm the user. (This does not include accidental errors.)

This thread explains how Microsoft software is malware and why (neo) /g/ should avoid it.

Microsoft Back Doors

Microsoft has already backdoored its disk encryption. https://theintercept.com/2015/12/28/recently-bought-a-windows-computer-microsoft-probably-has-your-encryption-key/

Microsoft Windows has a universal back door through which any change whatsoever can be imposed on the users. http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=201806263

More information on when this was used. http://slated.org/windows_by_stealth_the_updates_you_dont_want

In Windows 10, the universal back door is no longer hidden; all “upgrades” will be forcibly and immediately imposed. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/07/windows-10-updates-to-be-automatic-and-mandatory-for-home-users/

Windows 8 also has a back door for remotely deleting apps. http://www.computerworld.com/article/2500036/desktop-apps/microsoft--we-can-remotely-delete-windows-8-apps.html

You might well decide to let a security service that you trust remotely deactivate programs that it considers malicious. But there is no excuse for deleting the programs, and you should have the right to decide who (if anyone) to trust in this way.

Windows 8's back doors are so gaping that the German government has decided it can't be trusted. http://drleonardcoldwell.com/2013/08/23/leaked-german-government-warns-key-entities-not-to-use-windows-8-linked-to-nsa/

Microsoft Sabotage

The wrongs in this section are not precisely malware, since they do not involve making the program that runs in a way that hurts the user. But they are a lot like malware, since they are technical Microsoft actions that harm to the users of specific Microsoft software.

Microsoft has desupported all future Intel CPUs for Windows 7 and 8. Those machines will be stuck with the nastier Windows 10. AMD and Qualcomm CPUs, too. http://www.theverge.com/2016/1/16/10780876/microsoft-windows-support-policy-new-processors-skylake http://gizmodo.com/only-the-latest-version-of-windows-will-run-on-some-fut-1753545825

Of course, Windows 7 and 8 are unethical too, because they are proprietary software. But this example of Microsoft's wielding its power demonstrates the power it holds.

Free software developers also stop maintaining old versions of their programs, but this is not unfair to users because the users of free software have control over it. If it is important enough to you, you and other users can hire someone to support the old version on your future platforms.

Microsoft is repeatedly nagging many users to install Windows 10. http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/sep/11/microsoft-downloading-windows-1

Microsoft informs the NSA of bugs in Windows before fixing them. http://www.computerworlduk.com/blogs/open-enterprise/how-can-any-company-ever-trust-microsoft-again-3569376/
>>
Microsoft cut off security fixes for Windows XP, except to some big users that pay exorbitantly. http://www.computerworlduk.com/blogs/open-enterprise/windows-xp-end-of-an-era-end-of-an-error-3569489/

Microsoft is going to cut off support for some Internet Explorer versions in the same way. http://www.computerworlduk.com/news/security/3605515/more-than-half-of-all-ie-users-face-patch-axe-in-10-months/

A person or company has the right to cease to work on a particular program; the wrong here is Microsoft does this after having made the users dependent on Microsoft, because they are not free to ask anyone else to work on the program for them.

Microsoft Surveillance

Windows 10 ships with default settings that show no regard for the privacy of its users, giving Microsoft the “right” to snoop on the users' files, text input, voice input, location info, contacts, calendar records and web browsing history, as well as automatically connecting the machines to open hotspots and showing targeted ads. https://web.archive.org/web/20151001035410/https://jonathan.porta.codes/2015/07/30/windows-10-seems-to-have-some-scary-privacy-defaults/

Windows 10 sends identifiable information to Microsoft, even if a user turns off its Bing search and Cortana features, and activates the privacy-protection settings. http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/08/even-when-told-not-to-windows-10-just-cant-stop-talking-to-microsoft/

Microsoft uses Windows 10's “privacy policy” to overtly impose a “right” to look at users' files at any time. Windows 10 full disk encryption gives Microsoft a key. https://edri.org/microsofts-new-small-print-how-your-personal-data-abused/

Thus, Windows is overt malware in regard to surveillance, as in other issues.

We can suppose Microsoft look at users' files for the US government on demand, though the “privacy policy” does not explicit say so. Will it look at users' files for the Chinese government on demand?

The unique “advertising ID” for each user enables other companies to track the browsing of each specific user.

>>
It's as if Microsoft has deliberately chosen to make Windows 10 maximally evil on every dimension; to make a grab for total power over anyone that doesn't drop Windows now.

Windows 10 requires users to give permission for total snooping, including their files, their commands, their text input, and their voice input. http://www.techworm.net/2014/10/microsofts-windows-10-permission-watch-every-move.html

Spyware in Windows: Windows Update snoops on the user. Windows 8.1 snoops on local searches. And there's a secret NSA key in Windows, whose functions we don't know. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2003/02/28/windows_update_keeps_tabs/ http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft-windows/look-the-black-underbelly-of-windows-81-blue-222175 http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article40836.html

As a GNU/Linux user who dislikes Microsoft as much as anyone else, I will ask, would you kindly shut the fuck up? Your shilling does not help our cause, and in fact just makes you look like an autistic sperglord. there's some utilities for trying to de-botnet things, but they're fighting a futile battle, really. You can block the botnettery but it's not a simple matter of installing some utility, you have to kill it at the router level to be sure. (The telemetry components bypass the hosts file, among other things. The OS is actively working against you) MS has already "accidentally" reset the privacy settings to defaults in an update.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK
>>
>>53530502

microsoft tracks user data solely so that it can remain competitive and deliver profits to their shareholders. that is the only thing they care about.

they don't give two shits about the data you download or upload so long as it doesn't constitute their intellectual property, and even there they are now trying to adapt their business model to a market where data is more valuable than software; piracy won't mean much when the consumer pays for software by how it's used and what it does (for example to facilitate targeted ads).

if there is evil it is because there are forces with ulterior motives than profit incentive or enabling monopoly of corporate entities e.g. corrupt government officials.

even so, if you are afraid of your information being stolen then don't make that information available on a device which connects to the internet.

I remeber, back in the days people got butthurt about Microsoft forcing them to update to Windows XP and that they dropped support for XP programs on Win 2000. This "force update" thing was pretty much everywhere in the media. You literally put linux image on a usb pendrive - install that shit with next next - boom fully function OS and probably even most proprietary drivers were auto installed if not either run GUI or write a command.

It's the best OS if you want to be productive, operable out of the box.

The stories you hear about wasting time, fixing shit all the time is because people use less popular distros or configure everything on their own from 0, for no reason - other than consuming their time or ricing it up.

In the end distros like fedora, ubuntu have huuuge communities and pretty much all your problems are already covered with a fast solution in the forums - and assuming you run at least somewhat budget modern hardware you're supported 100% and expect 0 problems with Linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
