How I felt about it too. I was using Firefox for ages because of NoScript but after the umpteenth million time it bogged down my entire system I just dropped it and started using Chrome. I tried to use Chromium but the lack of .h264 support killed it and google nor /g/ could help so I just ended up using Chrome.

pentadactyl.

It works fine except whenever I update Firefox. Every single time I do, I regret having done so.

I thought Firefox had already hit rock bottom, but then I update it and am still surprised by how much worse they can make it.

Since v45 I've had issues with hardware acceleration causing assertion failures in my configuration. (I found a work-around by changing my Xorg.conf) On top of that, I've had an issue where autoscrolling becomes ridiculously unresponsive sometimes - especially after the browser has been open for an hour or so. I have to continuously restart it.

One of these days I'm going to find a way to downgrade back to v40 or so, since that one was working fine for me.

Chrome. I hate myself as much as everyone here hates me, but there's no point in resisting. Even the Pale Moon devs just admitted that their current position is untenable and they're going to go Web 3.0 like everyone else, so where does that leave something like SeaMonkey?

It's pointless to resist anymore. Chrome and Google own the Internet, like how Windows and Microsoft own the PC market.

Just fine, since SeaMonkey uses a recent version of Gecko (2.40 uses the same version as Firefox 43). The point of SM is to retain a familiar UI and features, rather than to be an inherently outdated piece of shit like Palememe. It's a perfectly modern web browser under the hood.

It will take more 2 years for that, at least one year since it doesnt even have a schedule to nightly which takes ~6mo to reach stable.

I use Chrome because currently it's the best. If any other big team or company can make a better browser, I've no issue switching to it.

I don't have any particular allegiance to Google, their browser is just the best, even though it's not flawless. It actually looks boring, but no other browser beats it in terms of rendering performance, standards compliance, developer tools etc etc.

Firefox is also useful if you want to use their console, because it outputs a lot of shit there. Firefox also has quite good graphics rendering, I'm not sure what is different, but I think Firefox renders pictures a little better than Chrome even (the colours, I mean).

Safari is mostly UI eye-candy. Now it's fast, yeah, but that's all they got. They don't support many standards, their dev tools/console is a pain in the colon and it can't even play webms.

So, I see no alternative to Chrome. You could use Chromium if it works for you. It has rendering issues for me, some pages has major scaling issues, it must be that those who packaged these binaries have screwed up somewhere. I used to use Chromium when it worked fine, now I have to use Chrome, because Chromium no longer works on all sites for me.

Because SeaMonkey is managed by a small team of developers and stable releases are frozen for a few months so that they can do final bug fixing work. Despite it being similar to Firefox, they encounter a lot of unique bugs that need to be squashed.

As for security releases, they're done via standard incremental updates. SeaMonkey 2.42 is due by the end of the month to fix some things (and is already available if you seek it out, as are 64-bit builds).

They also do nightly and beta builds just like Firefox. Version 2.43 is currently the beta and based on Gecko 46. The currently nightly builds are version 2.45 and based on Gecko 48.
>>
>>53541906
your wm is called awesome?
>>
>>53541942
Yeah.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Awesome
It basically combines all the good aspects of a tiling wm (blazing speed, efficient workflow, automatic window management, etc.) with all the benefits of a stacking wm (ease of use, mainly) and throws in some unique features (such as window-exclusive desktops, desktop-exclusive layouts, its own DE-esque panel, mouse support for a lot of actions that would logically benefit from mouse support, etc.).

wouldnt you lose all the applications though? i guess you can just install whatever you need manually.. but what about settings center and that stuff? all that will be gone.
>>
>>53542144
>wouldnt you lose all the applications though?

Nope. You'd be surprised just how little your DE actually does. All the programs you had installed will still be there, and you can still run them normally, and awesome will be quite happy to make sure that they work how you want them too.
You'll lose your DE-provided titlebars, but if you want awesome can be configured to put them back with basically whatever you want on them.

The settings center of your DE will be gone, yes, but everything you did with it can be redone in awesome natively. Awesome has a central configuration file written in Lua that's actually layed out fairly nicely.
But even then, a lot of the things you used the settings center for was to fix problems created by your DE itself. Stuff like your theme, desktop background, etc. is all DE-specific stuff that a WM can easily handle on its own.

Icedove isn't a browser and has literally nothing to do with Icecat, so I'm not sure what you mean.
>>
>>53543133
yeah I know, is it worth using it over Thunderbird?

from what I got, it tries to be the email client equivalent of Icecat
>>
>>53543212
It's actually the email equivalent of Iceweasel, a completely unrelated web browser made by Debian.

I use Fossamail right now but I'm probably dropping it soon.
>>
>>53543285

doesn't werk fossamail ?
>>
>>53543317
?
I've had no problems with it. In fact it's worked a lot better than the alternatives I've tried, none of which could actually send mail through my outlook account.

Compared to Internet Explorer tab groups, which works fully automatically, and doesn't require to click into a tab manager view to be used, the Firefox version is complete garbage.

Do you have a 4K screen resolution? 720p is enough.

after a while you get used to the slowness and the addons become real handy.

Youtube crashes it though. I've tried the usual workarounds with addons, but it still keeps crashing when I try and interact with the flash player.

Just downloaded an installed it to give it a spin. It's slower than IE 10.

I'm using firefox but I have to close it and reopen it every couple of days or it gets stupidly slow and starts eating up 1gb+ of ram.

I use both Firefox and Palemoon.

Also, I fixed someone's PC, that person really hangs on Internet Explorer all the time.

So I installed both Firefox and Palemoon.
And this... https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/foxe9/

And also a branding XUL file that rebrands palemoon as "Windows explorer" with icons and everything.

He did not notice anything yet, but I know he'll be safe this time.

Did Opera (Chromium version) update again recently? Something has definitely changed because the new page screen layout has been altered and there's this annoying problem now when scrolling pages. I thought it was my scroll wheel spazzing out but it seems to be the browser where everything on the page will disappear (no scroll tab at the side either) and then it will comeback seconds later, with a bit of flickering. Only happens while a webpage is loading.
