I'm on a maximum budget if £160 to buy myself a computer suitable for word processing and watching movies so I don't die of boredom.
£20 of that probably will go to Microsoft word.
What the hell should I be looking for? I reckon a small desktop is cheaper as I've already got a monitor.

Id say some thinkpad t420 or if you can get a cheap t430, the later generation the processor is, also the better its "gpu"(i believe it does affect movies.)
