If you check user ratings on the same hard drive on both Amazon and Newegg you tend to see more negative reviews saying the drive was DOA on Amazon.
I guess they figure that the extra time and money it would take to properly pack a mechanical hard drive costs more than the slight percentage in returned drives and consumer aggravation does.

Had this $140 Dell monitor show up this morning, got a refund immediately. Tard used crumbled magazine pages for packaging and the monitor was sticking out of that hole when it was delivered. Also forgot to put the cables in the box, literal asshole.

My last Newegg order had the hard drive in just the anti static bag, laying on the bottom of the package. There was just a small strip of bubble wrap that did nothing to stop the other boxed items from knocking around. They did give me a prepaid shipping label to return the drive; I didn't feel like taking a chance. Bought the retail boxed drive later for a few bucks more.
I don't have any photos, but I won a 4K monitor (UP3216Q) last year and the packaging had a big hole in it and the box was filled with gravel and water, so they sent me another one and it came with a huge crack in the screen so they sent me yet another one + a compensation of $360 that I put into a new GPU.
