Console that has a hard time running anything 1080p at 60FPS is very good for VR that pretty much requires twice the power than normal software needs.

a console that can barely run games over 40 FPS will not be a better experience. Besides, by the time PSVR comes out, OR and Vive will cost just as much as PSVR and have much better tech and games. I'm ordering the Vive this month as it won't be in the UK till May

VR requires very high framerates with no stuttering/dips at all, at a high resolution. Your shitty console isn't going to be able to do that.
But then again, who cares? VR is nothing but a shitty gimmick that's going to die out in a couple of years.

You realize most optimization comes from coding strategies and not simple compiler optimizations, right? Things like maintaining spatial and temporal locality to take advantage of cache? On top of this, you are retarded if you think people are doing special optimizations for your PlayStation. Developers just write everything in C/C++ and cross compile with a minimal number of changes needed.

This is going to flop, Sony has vastly underestimated what it means to run VR. The PS4 does not have enough performance to drive good frame rates (60+) at 1920*1080 (playstation VR total res).

In addition to this the resolution is shit. People have been recommending 2560*1440 as the optimum resolution because of how fucking close your eyes are to the screen. The Oculus rift barely matches this res right now.

That pretty much kills the purpose of VR. The mongolian dancer is right, sony bit off more than it could chew. Either they release VR games with shitty graphics or with shitty frame rates. Sony is fucked either way.
>>
Is there even a market for Sony VR? Given that most of the PS4's sales were due to it being the dudebro multiplat machine instead of the Xbox, I'm confused why Sony is trying to enter the VR market. You're paying the release price of the console again just for more hardware, and doubling the size of your console just to play VR games. Phone-based VR is fine for normies, and enthusiasts will want PCVR to max out their hardware. Who's left? Who's willing to spend $400 on sub-standard VR? the Morpheus is going to flop because it's neither cheap nor good, all it has are games and the PS4 has none anyway.

Actually they will do 30-40fps->120fps and they will get away with it.

This will be the more expensive gimmick in the history of videogames. 95% of PSVR games will be turret style, as in Cardboard, with a fixed horizon and things coming to you. It will be soo tiresome after a few days.

Idk man, I got to play with all the VR devices at PAX Prime last year and Rift and VIVE are pretty comparable.

Vive has amazing tech with the lighthouses where 3rd parties could take full advantage of the light that is emitted for tracking purposes.
Plus with that camera, AR is easier to pull off.

The Rift was SIGNIFICANTLY more comfortable to wear and is really light. Plus the Touch controllers just felt and worked better than the Vive wands with how theyre designed.

Vive relies on entirely 3rd party devs to create content while Rift has been subsidizing groups for a few years so Rift will have better out of the gate content.

Both systems are comparable with room scale VR with 15x15 for Vive and 12x12 for Rift. Then in 6 months, both groups said theyll be fully cross compatible with support.

It will be very interesting to see where things go with these two groups.
Im personally buying the Rift after experiencing the headset and controllers along with the game line up coming out first. Loved EVE and Luckys tale and looking forward to the F-Zero knock off.

The PSVR though? Super uncomfortable, choppy visuals, poor tracking, and Dk1.5 level screen quality. I really disliked using that device.

Just wanted to thank you for the info. I've been inquiring everywhere on how comfortable these devices are to wear. For some reason, nobody seems to factor this in. My favorite headphones for watching movies is HD 558. Not because they have the best sound, but because they are the most comfortable to wear for an entire movie. I used the 970 as an example since it's explicitly the minimum GPU recommended for VR. Also your benchmark is kinda pointless since RotTR is one of the most GPU-demanding games out right now (although performance has been improved with subsequent patched) Most VR games are cel-shaded for a reason, they usually aren't as graphically demanding to achieve 90fps.

I wonder if any game devs will reach that standard without lowering the graphical quality dramatically. 55 fps minimum at 1920x1080 in modern games is really hard to achieve with the hardware the ps4 has, if I have understood correctly the performance of the ps4 is comparable to a pc with a decent processor and a gtx 750 or some similar gpu.

>Players have to be able to see the hairs on a dog. Also, graphical tricks used in the past — like using flat 2D images to provide set dressing like grass — become obvious when viewing a 3D picture up close.

I stay with my point. You can't have enough power for virtual reality and neither consoles or PCs have what is needed right now. They will release games that are developed for VR systems that will try to work around those problems but don't think you will be able to enjoy the most recent releases in VR.

You're implying normies care about this.

Reminder, normies are people who play their games at 720p30 on low graphical settings and genuinely think it looks amazing.

This is the audience the PSVR is targeting: People who are already dumb enough to play games using consoles.

PC users who are not Facebook drones will almost surely get the Vive.

I know the virtualboy wasn't that good, but this VR shit from sony is going to end up the same way.
Until we get to the point where we can be in a room and interact with virtual objects with the walls creating a seamless virtual world without special helmets, this is all hype for the average consumer and a poor $ making scheme that screams desperation on behalf of sony's stock.

Nah, it'll probably stay as short films, news pieces, and promotional bits for a while. Directing a feature length 360° movie would be a pain in the neck, and too much of an exercise to watch. I can see 3d video becoming more popular again though, since it's such a piece of piss to pull off in VR.

Get rekt
IHS Technology’s Director of Games Piers Harding-Rollspredicts that, even with the October launch, PlayStation VR will dominate the market share with 64% of the installed base in 2016 (that’s not counting mobile VR, obviously), translating in 1.6 million units sold. This is consistent withour previous report from SuperData Research, which suggested sales of approximately 1.9 units at a time when PlayStation VR was still pinned for a launch in the first half of the year, though their estimate on market share is drastically different.

That’s mainly because Harding-Rolls estimates that PlayStation 4 will have a much bigger addressable market this year than the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

With a forecast installed base of 53m PS4s by the end of 2016, Sony has a much bigger addressable market of ‘ready-to-go’ consumers to address than PC-based solutions. In contrast, IHS forecasts that 17m consumers will addressable by Oculus Rift and HTC Vive by the end of 2016.

He also believes that Sony’s experience with the PlayStation platform will help them create quality content for PlayStation VR.

Sony has confirmed that over 230 developers are working on the PlayStation VR platform. Sony’s existing in-house expertise and third-party relationships means it is well positioned to build a strong body of content for launch of the platform.

Sony’s walled garden approach to the PS4 platform means it is well placed to provide a better controlled and consistent VR experience to consumers. This will be important in driving adoption and positive word of mouth for PlayStation VR.

So? The vast majority of people are retarded, so it is not at all surprising they they would buy consoles. Consoles are a huge market because normies are too stupid to do thirty minutes of reading and build a PC.

Console VR is going to suck, just like console everything sucks. It will be successful, but that does not make it good.

>more VR games for sure
On a console? Are you fucking joking?
>better VR games for sure too, because there is only 1 hardware to adapt for
No. Dev here, going from rift to vive or vice versa is trivial. Adapting shit to or from the morph is a fucking pain. Not to mention getting shit running smoothly on a console can be utterly fucky for dev inexperienced in optimising stuff. Translation: You're gonna see a lot of shitty fucking games that wouldn't be so shit with pc hardware.
>better experience, because it runs perfectly fine
Nuigga no. The only console I could actually trust in this generation for smooth VR is the wii fucking u.
Splatoon runs beautifully at true 1080p 60fps, unlike the others which run upscaled and struggle at 30fps.
Sure, the others are more powerful, but so long as nintendo are the only ones that care about proper coding, it's staying the same.
>But what if sony devs started using nintendo tier code??? That'd fix everything, r-right?!?!?
No, Fuck you.
If we lived in that world the xbone would be running the latest cod at 4k 90fps, but that's not the fucking world we live in, is it?
You think VR's gonna change that?

It'd be nice if it where a $400 headset with the raw specs of the vive or rift, but even that's not gonna happen.
Lock it to a console and it's even more fucked.
That box that sits between it and the PS4 looks like a certified shitfucker.
Prove me wrong, it'd love it to be a great little system, but right now you might as well be banging on about blast processing.
>>
>>53550580
>That box that sits between it and the PS4 looks like a certified shitfucker.

And it genuinely is what it looks like! All it does is handle audio and send the TV an unwarped picture.

The best part is, they want to tell us that there'll be a game for bystanders to play while you're in the headset, meaning the PS4 will, without any help, have to render 3 pictures instead of 2. Maybe even 4 or more, if they want split-screen within that!

It does. It's not fucking cell shaded, it's not upscaled, it can actually pump 120 million unique pixels per second. No other console today does that, which is a fucking tragedy given the other consoles have so much more power behind them.
They could, I bet if you asked big N to make a game for the PS4 it's run at 1080p 60fps with 16xAA piece of cake, or 4k 120fps with the only sacrifice being AA.
It's not that nintendo is good, everyone else is just so utterly fucking horrible.
