Now, why windows' update system is such utter shit? I would've liked to get some work done today
>>
How is Windows on virt-manager (KVM) performance wise?
>>
why would you install some updates manually?

Brah. I once installed Linux on a flash drive and the fucker took forever to update. I guess that means Linux is shit.

Without benchmarking, I'd say it's really close to native bare metal performance. I have a few virtualization servers and -workstations where I passthrough multiple GPUs to multiple guests and it feels native.

At home I play games with virtualized win10, it's that good.

>why would you install some updates manually?

To cut the update time from ten hours to mere hours. MS has issued a few updates which will help the update process, but they have to be installed beforehand and manually for them to help.

Pictured, I have all the updates loaded on an ISO and am running them off it.

Dude, I've installed win7 hundreds of times due to my job description. I know it can take a lot of time even on bare metal. Check out

Building a properly functional package manager would be a waste of time. It isn't like large numbers of people are going to drop Windows over long updates.
>>
>>53518314
I have an SSD and 200mb/s connection. A clean W7 install takes like half an hour.

>>53518347
Clean install takes me under 30 seconds (copy a preconfigured virtual machine).

How long updates take from win7 (no service packs) to be concurrent?
>>
>>53518377
Not sure how long it takes, I just install W7, run updater, reboot like twice and I'm good.

It's not like I'd be in the office anyway. Or paid by hour for that matter
>>
>>53518377
At this point, figure at least 4 hours, and at least one "stuck" update. I had a single get stuck overnight last time I did this, but rebooting cleared it. From SP1, you need 300 or so updates at last count.

isn't what you're doing basically avatarfagging

We must be vigilant in all aspects of our life.

Fuck those stick updates, when installing my Plex server (new version requires you to be fully updated on Windows for some reason) I couldn't get it to get past one update. The update server took a shit or something finished after I rebooted and waited 3 hours

So going full Linux with a Windows vm for gaymez isn't such a bad idea?
>>
>>53518314
Is it still rocket science tier shit to set up?
I've been curious about pass-through for a while but I have no idea where to start.
Does it work on Arch and Gentoo?
>>
>>53519349
nah, not a bad idea in my opinion. I've been running gaymez liek this for half a year now with uptime usually over 60 days, spinning up gayming vm only when needed.

>>53519536
It's not that difficult anymore with >4.0 kernels, one doesn't have to deal with pci stubs or anything, things just werk.

just check this guy's posts on blogspot

http://vfio.blogspot.com/

and these archives

You can do it. I believe in you.

Here's current situation.

Gonna make a snapshot of this after updates finish, then activate it and update it to win10.

Thanks I guess I'll rid myself of my windows 10 installation as soon as I have time to do so
>>

Tell me first what hardware you have, or are you going to buy something for this?
>>
>>53520815
I'm using a laptop with an i7 3630qm and a Radeon HD 7600M 8gb of ram and I put in a 250gb ssd which is enough for me
>>
>>53518296
Sup brah, lets go grab a couple filaf sandies, and wash em down with some ice cold ronas, check out some tush
>>
>>53521467
nope, sorry. Can't use laptop.

You have to have two physical video cards and two screens for them or switch monitors inputs.

This near-bare-metal performance depends on giving the physical hardware to the guest. Emulated GPUs wont cut it.

For example at home, I'm using my iGPU HD4600 for host (debian) and passthrough my discrete card to the guest (windows).

My igpu is connected with a hdmi to the monitor, as is my discrete card as well. When I want to play with my VM, I have to use the discrete card's output.

It's simple to show but kinda difficult to explain. Read a bit and it'll become clear what this KVM passthrough is and what it is not.

Sorry to burst your bubble.
>>
>>53521604

To continue a bit, you'll need VT-d (or amd-vi) supported processor and support for it on the mainboard (which laptops wont have).

>>53518118

Well damn :|

Thanks guys :D guess I'll have to keep working towards a better setup then
>>
>>53521667
Yeah I've played around with a lot of distros and desktop environments since early 2000s but don't really care anymore. They all work well enough.

I loved kde before plasma hit, after that I lost interest on everything and just went with whatever.

Yes I recall the time when linus dissed gnome (2) and I agreed with him back then and still do. But it's easy, comfy and 2 was light.
