Happy Birthday RMS Edition.

Welcome to /flt/, we are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

1) Install a GNU/Linux on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Please avoid using the term “photoshop” as a verb, meaning any kind of photo manipulation or image editing in general. Photoshop is just the name of one particular image editing program, which should be avoided since it is proprietary. There are plenty of free programs for editing images, such as the GIMP.

> We don't describe free software as an “alternative” to proprietary, because that word presumes all the “alternatives” are legitimate and each additional one makes users better off. In effect, it assumes that free software ought to coexist with software that does not respect users' freedom.

>We believe that distribution as free software is the only ethical way to make software available for others to use. The other methods, nonfree software and Service as a Software Substitute subjugate their users. We do not think it is good to offer users those “alternatives” to free software.

It's OK to use the abbreviation “PC” to refer to a certain kind of computer hardware, but please don't use it with the implication that the computer is running Microsoft Windows. If you install GNU/Linux on the same computer, it is still a PC.

The term “WC” has been suggested for a computer running Windows.

Well that depends how much you care about bloatware as well as what you are going to be running it on.

If you have an older machine with old hardware then I would recommend Debian with xfce. But if none of that matter then just go with Xubuntu. I've used it before and really liked it.

Also I'm assuming you've never used Xfce before so you are probably going to experience some screen tearing issues. If this is the case then install a program called compton, you can find guides on google.

>x230
wifi on your machine is a bit unstable but it should work fine with https://github.com/FreedomBen/rtl8188ce-linux-driver
you only need to enable multi arch and install it, this should not break anything as long as you don't disable one arch later.

are you sure you want to install steam if you only have intel graphics? you don't need special GPU drivers for intel, they are FOSS and work fine by default.
>>
>>53517245
Don't worry about installing graphics drivers, they should already be installed. Just download the Steam deb installer from Steam and install it.

actually installing it through the nonfree repo would be the better way.

Arch/Gentoo + i3 for minimum bloat, urxvt for terminal emulator.

yes, it has a lot of stuff ready out of the box so you don't need to go looking for it, themes in particular are handled better, and general desktop settings are better organized, try lxde out too though

I'm trying to install Void Linux in VBox, and I don't know what I'm doind bad, because if I choose BIOS way, Vbox says to me "critical faiulure" but if I go EFI way I'm prompted to a "emergency terminal". Want the log of both issues?

I am running udhcpd on the Pi, so I should be able to do that, correct?
Like I said, I've already tried doing it through DNSmasq (without enabling DNSmasq's own DHCP server), but was unsuccessful.

Either way, it should work through Bonjour as well.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Hey guys, I came here a couple months ago about a really old aspire one Acer and trying out Linux for the first time. Someone suggested Debian and I have to thank you whoever that was because it basically revived this thing. Don't have to bring my thinkpad t420 to class anymore because this thing fits snugly with my books.
I was thinking of installing arch now because I figured that'd be starting as minimally as possible, which would help this thing even more. I wanted to ask though, are the memes true? Like about how pacman breaks shit all the time and that general maintenance takes forever? This'll be my first minimal install of a distro so I wanna make sure keeping it working won't suck.
>>
>>53521281
the minimal install of debian is smaller actually, but that shouldn't matter too much.
this has happened before but is very rare and you don't need to worry about it if you don't rely completely on this computer.
if you want to try before actually installing it on real hardware you could do so in a VM or something.

It's actually called writing the iso to an usb-storage-device. burning is used for CDs only.

>the minimal install of debian is smaller actually
Is it? Unselecting all of the options, apart from "core utilities" or however it's called? If you go and install the same packages on both, your Debian install will probably end up using more space, since it pulls in way more "dependencies". With dependencies, I mean the suggested or recommended packages.
>>
>>53522009
--no-install-recommends is a thing
debian minimal is ~125mb, arch minimal is ~240mb

depends on if you do it before or after the install, what matters is that this will be the behavior as soon as you make it the behavior and it stays that way.
