You know what's going to kill it before it gets off the ground? How fucking garbage FOSS UX design is. So many UIs look straight out of the 90s and make hardly any sense.
There's one bright side. It's FOSS software.

1: find people who really understand UI and UX who are willing to apply their expertise to FOSS.
2: convince all the FOSS programmers that UI and UX matter, that the concerns the UI and UX people raise cannot be dismissed with "if people can't figure it out as it is, they're too stupid to computer", and to just shut up and implement these fixes.
1 is going to be a hell of a lot easier than 2.

You fucking know it is. By far the two worst parts about the FOSS community is the mentality of there is no bad design, only bad users, and that compatibility and performance is better than progress. Vim has been mostly the same with almost no improvements for decades because the maintainer is a piece of shit who thinks maintaining compatibility for dead OSes is more important than asynchronous processing. And that's not the only example of shitty central maintainers.
GIMP is like if blender never admitted it was pretty shitty and so never moved forward. There's this crippling mentality of "good enough" that is so prevalent in freetards that so little progress is ever made.

UX is about functionality, and how easy that functionality is to access and use.
Photoshop has pretty okay UX, and it's not because the panels are dark grey. It's because shit in the program doesn't behave according to some random unintuitive and arbitrary ruleset like Gimp.
Want to move layers around? No problem, want to draw anywhere without arbitrary layer boundaries? Go for it. Want stupid roadblocks interrupting your workflow? Then try Gimp.
Nobody gives a shit if Gimp has good functionality if they can't get far enough to find it.

Yes, let's hide actual functionality five layers deep so the average user won't get overwhelmed and augment the UI with fancy ribbons to [Export this to the cloud] and [Share that on fecesbook] instead. The tool settings area is superfluous too, telemetry suggests that 87% of people only use the predefined brushes so let's have it replaced with a "trending apps & recommendations" feed, that's what users demand from a modern app.
user interface design is more difficult to do well than any kind of cod running under the hood. it's also boring as shit to work on UI which is why you don't see FOSS monkeys doing it for free, you have to pay some poor sap a salary if you want a decent product.
not saying any of this is a good thing, just saying that's why all the linux UIs are way behind windows and apple
