Hey /g/ ive got a bit of a problem. I bought an r9 290 bout 3 months ago and a week ago it started to blackscreen at 90c. It is not a psu problem just purely heat. I was wondering is i shoulh get artic silver 5 thermal paste and change out gpu paste or list it for $200 and get a gtx 970.

You should have gotten an HD 7970Ghz, or an HD 7990
I've had a similar problem with a 560ti a fwe years back...
Basically, the card is fucked, RMA it. Some manufacturers won't do a RMA if you applied new paste to it. (How I got fucked over!)
If it's refurb/can't do an RMA, you're fucked!

The black screen problem is common with the 200 series. It's a hardware defect with the hynix memory chips not getting enough voltage. It's not fixable. You can blame amd.

A few posts short of 1600. That's only on one forum.
It's a common defect. That's what you get for cheaping out and buying amd.

Have you simply tried setting a custom fan curve? I ran two reference 290's in crossfire with an overclock and they didn't get above 82c. The fan isn't BAD on the 290, it's just loud as fuck.

I have msi 100% fan speed still cutoff at 90c

I'd try repasting it and see what happens
Guys sell or thermal paste simple answer

Aight thanks
get some ic diamond. as5 is kinda old.
A bit of thermal paste and tweeking of the fan controls should do it other wise you can get better custom fans from Antec, NZXT or actictec
Custom fans do work wonders for this type of card anyway.

Anon I think I know the problem

I always wonder how lucky I am when it comes to hardware, I always seem to get great overlocks on my cpus, I also always seem to be able to get the best chips for cards.
I have 3 R9 290s, and none of them have any issues. And after 10 years of parts I still have only 1 that has ever been DOA.

A aftermarket cooler would be cheaper.

that's because most people have that, but why would you post on the internet that your shit works great? not a very big reason. but if it doesn't work everybody starts posting and searching. so that 1% which is defect, looks like 20% or more

Oh yeah? What about VRM? How exactly is it going to cool itself?

How the hell do you get it to 90c? Mine stays at 60 to 65c when under load.

Reference 290 is designed to run at 95c
