For the purposes of VR porn, yea I would say its about on par. I've had hands on time with both and the headstrap is literally the largest bonus since both your hands are now free and that does a lot as far as immersion while beating it goes
I'm not trying to say the GearVR isn't a far better and more advanced VR system than Cardboard, but for the price difference I find it hard to lean twords spending 5 times (or more if you get a literal cardboard model) for a product that does nearly the same thing.
