So if I tweet something bad about my company they can't fire me? Yeah right. FBI can decide not to hire you for whatever reason. Matter of fact someone they were recruiting was posting on facebook or twitter about piracy and they didn't get hired. Old now, maybe 5yrs back.

Depends on clearance.
I take it you're getting a normal Secret clearance or possible a confidential.
They check state, county, local and obviously federal police databases.
Bank accounts and anything dealing with debt and credit cards, car payments, school bills, medical ect.
They talk to people who know you that you list, previous employers is a big one so it's best to make sure you let them know whats happening or at least remind them who you are.
Lower clearances like secret and confidential usually don't involve talking to neighbors tho.
You'll see whats going on when you do e-quip.
Most of it's just making sure you're not selling out to other nations or know people you probably shouldn't.
Nothing to worry about it just takes a damn long time.
Now if you need TSSI for whatever reason expect it to be way more in depth and having to talk to a fed or polygraph.

I had to get a vulnerable persons check when I worked for a school board and managed to pass despite having an arrest record.
Secret DOD clearance here, no clue. Took em 6 months to check though. I have no social media presence though.

depends how high the security clearance is. If you are on the lowest rung of security then not much more than a background check. At the highest levels, they will check everything including going and talking to neighbours, friends, family, old employers, your web history, they may even demand to see hard drives and will definitely check call histories text history etc.
