Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Ok

budget: cheapest possible that can perform what I want (under $150, under $100 if possible)

Size: Don't care, will lug something heavy if necessary, portability is not a concern.

Performance: Run linux and do basic web browsing and video playback.

My history with thinkpads:
- 2 years ago bought a x220 for 200 bucks and a SSD, then sold it because I didnt use it, ever for 280.
- 1 year ago bought 2 T61s in Venezuela for 50 bucks, working.
- Sold one for 40(had a inverter damaged), changed thermal paste on the other and was my daily for a year.
- Bought a T400 with some error of HDD for 50 bucks, and keyboard with 12 missing caps, turned out it was just mal connected, gave it my t61 kb and sold it for 80 just now.
- Bought a Keyboard (going for it tomorrow) and replacing my T61 one (12 missing caps) and selling that for 60 bucks.

I dont think I'll use laptops again, but it was nice for the time being.

are third party batteries really that bad?

looking into replacing the battery on my t420s. Genuine 6 cells (3900maH) go for $90 while a third party I found was 5200maH and went for $60.

As well the ultrabay batteries genuine are cheaper on aliexpress than ebay/amazon so I might go for that as well.

Not really, I can pull over 3hrs with the brightness way over 50% ony my third party 6-cell, could probably go even longer with the brightness turned down
>>
>>53511256
That's terrible, I got 2 or 3 hours on my T60p and T61 when I've had them...

I use 3rd party batteries, I've yet to have a problem nor has there been other people who had problems with them.
3rd party adapters are shit, I've yet to get an knock off genuine AC adapter (I dont buy them new, I buy them used if that matters)

As far as ultrabay batteries... I can't really say, sometimes they use different cell types for even OEM.

Who can beat a $30-40 3rd party battery with warranties from 6 months to 2 years?

my iBook has a 3rd party battery and its working great... now my A31p one isn't but I think they just kept it on shelf since 2003

X220 IPS is probably the best deal going right now if you can deal with the resolution and screen size.

an i5 1600x900 T420 will keep you going for a few years with no problems if you can deal with the TN display.

I've been using this T420 for over a year now and it's just a tank. bought it for under $200 and it was fine as it was, but I put in some upgrades and now it's just a fantastic machine. If I had to, I could keep using it for years to come.
>>
/tpg/, do you think it's viable to take an x220 and keep it relatively up to date in hardware for twenty years?
>>
>>53514537

no. we probably won't even use laptops in 20 years.

if you go back 20 years you're at the dawn of mainstream internet and most people used beige desktops from Packard Bell and IBM. the modern laptop had just been invented.

go back another 20 and the "personal computer" was something only known of by hobbyist nerds.

20 years in the future your X220 might still function but "relatively up to date" is just insanity

Alright, you memesters. You won. I'm falling for the thinkpad+linux or w7 meme. I need a machine for college, because fuck it, I'm tired of handwriting.

God forbid I might even have the audacity to watch youtube videos. I know >>53508109 is in a similar boat, but fuck it, let's bump the thread.

I'm on a tight budget, I can get a t400 for 150$ or a t410 for 200$. The prices fucking suck because eastern yurop. My question is: Will the P8600 shit the bed when I'm trying to watch a 720p youtube video? How bad is it?

Because of the prices in your country, I'd recommend a T410, it'll perform better while not costing much more, Core 2 duos in america are like $100 here, so I often recommend them.

the 410 has an i5 520 and the t400 is the one with the P8600. Both would have 4gb ram

Good shit, the T410 is also DDR3, which helps, and you're getting a 16:10 display just like the T400.

That's good, yeah, but not enough to justify paying twice the amount you do in the US. It's a shame Thinkpad X are almost the only option to have a small sub-13" screen and an i5. Most stuff in that size is Celeron N, and that's exactly what I have right now.
>>
>>53518275
Also 768p and no option to upgrade to 1080p is fucking bullshit at that price point, especially because the x250 does offer that option.

Most thinkpads have swappable RAM and HDDs/SSD, so you could really get any one with an i5 or i7 and just throw a new hard drive (and a second one too, if there's an Ultrabay or a mSATA port on the one you get), and some new RAM.

Budget: $500-$1000

Requirements: programming, autocad, light gayming, 1080p

I've been looking at the t450s for awhile now but I'm still unsure and you guys seem to know a lot about the thinkpad laptops
>>
>>53520610
You should probably be looking into the W550s for autocad instead of T450s.

Since you make no mention of weight or size, a W530 with a 9-cell battery might be great for you too, you'd certainly get more out of one of those than a T450s.

Even my T60 benefitted from a cheap SSD, so yes.

Most T-series (non-s models) will let you upgrade processor. Graphics upgrades are a mobo swap (9 times out of 10 not worth it) or external GPU. Lurk moar.

Hey /g/,
Looking to replace my 2011 MacBook Pro as the logic board seems to be failing on me.
The specs of my current machine are:
-2.7ghz 2nd gen i7
-8gb ddr3 1600mhz ram
-250gb SSD (which i plan to transfer from the macbook to the thinkpad)
-intel HD 3000 graphics (TOP KEK)

The ThinkPad has the following specs for $220USD:
-Core i5 3320M 2.60GHz
-8GB ram (not sure exact specs)
-intel HD 4000 graphics (less of a kek but still kek)

Thoughts? This will be my first windows computer after 4 years and I would like something to last roughly 2-3 years which is why I am considering this incremental upgrade in specs (ie. processor, shitty integrated graphics unit)

Third party batteries have about 60-70 percent capacity of the originals. For the price, they're damn good. Avoid third party chargers at all costs though. The t400 is very easy to disassemble. yeah, do it. VGA is an analog signal, HDMI is digital. Any adapter would have to have powered conversion hardware, which means it'll be more expensive and need either a USB port or power jack to work

Displayport to HDMI is digital to digital, so much cheaper and no need for conversion

That is correct. I forget how many there are total, but there are four holding down the palmrest across the front. Typically there is one under the battery as well. All of them will have a keyboard or microchip picture next time them.
