The second (unusable) harddrive bay might be left over from where they copied another laptop's casing and were too lazy to do anything with it.

I'm planning to replace my laptop's optical drive with my old main HDD. The old one is from a Thinkpad e320 (500GB, still need to make sure it's 2.5") and my new machine is Thinkpad w530.
