In other words, the lower bound on AlphaGo's true chance to win is about 45%.

Right now, it may have just been pure chance.
>>
>>53499712
Note that there's no element of pure chance in Lee Sedol's play. Even if the true chance of winning was 50%, then we'd know that we've managed to built a machine capable of playing Go at an equal level to a pro.

In other words, it would probably be 100% against virtually every amateur.

>>
>>53499669
AlphaGo would get stronger with more thinking time and hardware as well.

Also, Lee Sedol didn't “run out of” time. He deliberately used that much time.

In game 1, he was nowhere near the time limit and still lost hard. Then he actively decided to use up the full thinking time for the next 4 games.

Losing with time still left on the clock is considered a common criticism among pro players.

> But another Chinese media outlet said Mr Ke had earlier said he was not interested in facing off against the programme in the complex strategy game because he did not want it to copy his own world-beating tactics.

>“I don’t want to compete with AlphaGo because judging from its matches with Lee, AlphaGo is weaker than me,” he told Shanghai-based thepaper.cn. “I don’t want AlphaGo to copy my style.”

Chess is small time. Also, modern chess competition consists of seeing who has memorized more moves of an opening before the true game finally starts. Chess960 is better since opening memorization is impossible and thus player skill and creativity factors into the game from the very first move.

I know they've published a statistic correlating hardware strength (# of CPUs/GPUs) with Elo.

But what I'd be interested in is a statistic correlating training time with Elo, and a statistic correlating initial training set (e.g. self-trained, amateur online games only, pro games only) with Elo.
>>
>>53507911
Sounds interesting, although google might not want it to be known that they let it run for x months continuously to get better.
>>
>>53507911
Training time v.s. Elo isn't very interesting because it will either be flat with slight increase; sharp increase; plateau (most likely), sharp increase from the get go, then plateau (second most likely), or plateau followed by continuous increase, slowing down where you would otherwise expect a plateau. Eitherway, the point is that the longer you train, the better you will always do, as long as your model has enough capacity, until you plateau or overfit (also there will be jitters over the training curve in all these cases).
>>

>Training time v.s. You suggest this is not interesting but proceed to list so many possibilities that are all completely different with different effects on our ability to realistically improve the NN?

Specifically, does it plateau if not, and more importantly, if it does plateau, does it have a _fixed_ upper bound or can you still improve it, but with diminishing returns?

>>53507953
I don't see why they would hide this? Isn't the point of research to establish these methodologies?

I think it's pretty much an implicit assumption that they let it run for multiple months continuously.
>>
>>53499772
That's so wrong.

Many chess algorithms fare MUCH better against humans under blitz plays, for example. In fact, the massive advantage of heuristic Monte-Carlo search algorithm-based programs on the board is commonly reduced significantly in correspondence chess where players can have weeks to think on their moves.

Given, AlphaGo may retain its advantage over simple heuristic chess engines such as Stockfish (in their respective games obviously) since it uses a combination of machine learning/neural networks as well as Monte Carlo search tree methods.

Machines are MUCH better under time pressure because they feel no pressure and can process information much faster than humans can.

It's impressive but it's still a long way from claiming you can potentially use this to replace something like a doctor. As a tool to assist a professional human, maybe. But in the game that it lost it shows how disastrously it fails when things are a little unfamiliar and there's no way you can trust this thing, no matter how well developed it becomes, on making a life and death decision in the real world.

It still comes down to the fact that a powerful neural network, despite how it seems to have intuition, still can't achieve anything close to general intelligence and to make meaningful decision in the real world you need that.

you overvalue human intelligence. humans also make disastrous mistakes when forced to make a decision in unfamiliar territory, and it tends to be even worse when a person is under stress/pressure, while neural networks don't experience anxiety or its side effects. there are many scenarios in which i would quickly trust a well-trained neural network to make a decision over a human

How soon can we can AlphaGo vs. Ke?

When it can beat a human in a first person shooter, just with visual data.
>>
>>53511948

>>
>>53511948
aimbots m8
>>
The sad part is that if they do not release Alphago to the Go community as a training product all this show would have been for nothing. So an AI won against an human so what. It ain't the first time.
>>
>>53511794
Not true, all the variables defining the game state have a finite number of possible values.
>>
>>53512033
Aimbots only point the crosshair at an enemy (probably by some other means than processing visual data). I think he meant a bot actually playing a shooter only by processing the visual data.
>>
>>53512136
there are aimbots that point the crosshair based on visual data

>>53512067
the number is so high it's practically infinite
>>
>>53512067
the game can take an infinite amount of time to complete if given the chance so it does actually have infinite states.
>>
>>53512039
But alphago was the first to beat a human at go. If they release it how are you going to have the hardware to run it anyway?
>>
>>53512260
According to the Google guys there is a single PC version that wins 40% of the time against the distributed version. It seems that the way the program works there quickly is diminished returns in increasing the processing power.
>>
>>53512067
The game length is technically unrestricted.
>>
>>53512356
>technically unrestricted
I'm not so sure about that. A lot of things work in unexpected ways once you leave reasonable and tested boundaries.
See: graphical effects fucking up at round 200 min game time. SFZ vs. rEEtard + team
>>
>>53512067
Depends on whether you want to consider technical limitations of the hardware (e.g. an upper bound on the maximum game length that your client can handle) as part of the game or not.

In other words: Depends on whether you're abstracting the gameplay from the implementation or not.
>>
>>53512553
See >>53512565

I'd argue that the game length in DotA 2 is just as unrestricted as C is turing complete.

In the sense that either is true ‘iff’ you discount effects that only happen due to running out of bits in your implementation (e.g. limited pointer sizes, or limited representation of the game time variable).

C the language is turing complete in an abstract and practical sense, and DotA the game is potentially infinite in an abstract and practical sense.

Both are bounded only by the finite nature of the implementation.

Are they doing a 15 minute analysis of the last match like they did for the others? They were pretty comfy to watch
>>
>>53512565
I was indeed talking about physical limitations.

>>53512227
Practically != literally

>>53512356
But the memory holding the gamestate isn't.

Granted if the implementation is perfect, the indefinite length of the game makes the possibilities infinite, I didn't think of that.

i figured it out

the real reason google wants to beat humans at go
is to make the game irrelevant, thus removing any possible confusion about the naming of the go lang

what a formidable evil empire google has become.

It was pointed out repeatedly at multiple points in game commentary (implying you watched any of the games) that AlphaGo was considerably weaker during the Fan Hui matches, which was part of the reason Lee Sedol and most of the Go community were confident he would win going in, because he along with a large range of high-level pros would have handed it its ass if they had played it in October. So no, those matches are illustrative of nothing.

>sportsmen

Are you the same fag from that thread a couple of days ago who was saying Lee had Alphago 'figured out like a sports team figures out another sports team'?
>>
>>53500170

It's pretty clear from the way Deepmind was acting before the matches and the way they were acting during the game 4 press conference that they weren't planning for Lee to win a single game, so the fact that he managed to do that is frankly amazing, and kind of inspiring.
>>
>>53503909

Professional Go players devote their lives to Go from a very early age (you basically have to since exposure during childhood brain development is necessary to create a world-class player), and it's pretty common for especially talented players to turn pro in their teens. Even though he's 18, he's probably been eating, sleeping, and breathing Go for 11-15 years.

The Komi was determined (and actually changed relatively recently IIRC) based on a huge number of professional Go games. If the komi is too high, it's because fleshbags don't know how to properly take advantage of black.
>>
>>53514383

If it makes you feel any better, spoiler: the ghost eventually teaches Hikaru how to actually play Go, he goes on to be a professional on his own strength, and the ghost eventually fucks off once Hikaru blows him the fuck out over one of his moves.

Well, having alphago running on a super computer and beating humans is not as significant as having pocket calculators beating humans at chess.

Due to monte carlo requiring such vast processing power to be efficient, I don't see strong go bots becoming very common in the coming years, still.

I would love to practise against one, but consumer hardware will not advance to such levels where I could afford to run one even at my own level.

>>53516882
>where I could afford to run one even at my own level

>>53512349
If the standalone version can beat the distributed version 40% of the time, that's still better than Lee Sedol who beat it 20% of the time, so rest assured you will beat it 0% of the time.

Does Garlock know how go play go? I thought he doesn't know anything (or maybe very little), based on his commentaries during the game. But turns out he's an official with US AGA. Was he just playing dumb?
>>

He's a 3 dan amateur and actually quite knowledgeable. His role is to play dumb and ask beginner questions to keep the game analysis at a layman's level. His problem is that he plays a little too dumb.

No, he's not. He's a fucking idiot. The american rating system is notoriously fucked up.

Excluding gamemodes with hitscan weapons (in which even a basic stationary aimbot is far beyond human skill), an AI that played FPS based purely on visual/audio data would be very interesting and very impressive.

Prizes are given and received with both hands in asian culture. It is disrepectful to receive it only with one hand. In that scene we see a cultural conflict.
I hoped that google would at least research a little bit about asian culture, given how they are playing one of their master players. Maybe the prize giving was unexpected and it took them by surprise, who knows.
