How is it that KDE 1 looks better than new KDE?

KDE 1 to 3 were developed by professionals
>>
Looks okay. Back then it was designed to imitate windows 95 which wasn't really that bad looking either. The current DEs are designed to imitate OSX 10.10+ and Windows 8/10 which look like ass

Some times things end up looking pretty good when you try and make them functional first and foremost.

KDE 5 looks fine.
at least it looks way better than 3 or 4

As much as I am glad that everything about computers is pretty compatible these days, I really wish we had the excitement of variation.

What does PoorMan do?

Flat is not pretty.
Making things harder to read, just because simple figures scale easier is retarded.
I can understand why they removed a lot of features, so it is easier to manage, but I am still bitter over it.
I didn't see anything that made kde better aside from the visuals and the only reason I upgraded was because it is too hard to fight something like this.

I can't be the only one who misses the isometric pixel art icons

How is it windows 7 did such a good job of copying kde4, and windows 10 looks more like kde1?
>>
>>53487269
What I don't get about this is how that system draw increases when less is happening.

What the hell is GNOME3 doing? There's nothing even there.

No it literally just boots the kernel, no GNU userland tools.

It wasn't made by freetards, OP

Remember when the big sell for Linux was that you could use an old computer with it and it would work much better than the latest Windows?

What made the morons in charge ignore this huge advantage?

Both KDE and GNOME met the same fate that happened to Windows.

Target userbase changed.

Windows 2000 was the last windows created with the professional user in mind.
It was minimal, unobtrusive and straightforward.

Gnome was like that.
Gnome 2 happened, and it was okay-ish. The first version definately kept the look. Even in the last 2.3x releases it still retained a little bit of that "corporate" feel.
Since Gnome3 it's full blown normie
>>
>>53487466
For awhile there have been DEs that cater to low end PCs and DEs that cater to higher spec PCs. KDE and Gnome have always been considered "resource intensive". Xfce is for the lower end. And now we have LXDE for things like super low spec PCs and Rasp Pis, etc.
>>
>>53487307
plasma5 uses less resources though.
They removed all the good widgets, krunner is slightly lighter.
Gnome3 is heavy because the way they implemented everything to be like a website.
I don't know why they did that, but they did.
>>
>>53486807
It was designed by UNIX users to feel like CDE instead of hipster freetards to feel like Windows Vista.

>>
>>53486807
The real question is what the fuck happened to GNOME? Just tried using it again this year and it looks like they gave it the Windows 8 treatment (should be noted that I last used GNOME in 2003 or 2004 before taking a decade long break from using Linux).
>>
>>53486807
can you still do a simple install for KDE 1?

i like the lightweight 16 bit color icons and stuff like that, windows 2000-esque
>>
>>53487842
They have an obligation to innovation. It's that simple.

Use MATE or Cinnamon.
>>
>>53487883
>They have an obligation to innovation
It isn't innovation if they just end up making it worse.

>Use MATE or Cinnamon.
Currently use LXDE.
>>
>>53487923
build your own, or use something light like LXDE. oh wait.
>>
>>53487179
Looks pretty comfy t.b.h.
>>
>"minimalist" DEs
>use only a fraction less than the "heavy" DEs
>"lightweight" XFCE uses the same as "heavy" GNOME2 (MATE)

I still hate how people got punk'd in to thinking that the way to make programs lighter is to just take features away, rather than actually find ways to make the same features leaner.
