Hello, gentoomen. I have an old Nexus 7, 2011 version i believe and it is very slow. I googled around and there seems to be more people having the same problem and as per default every "tech expert" recommends resetting to factory defaults / updating firmware / updating the OS so i thought why not and did all of those. Who would have thought that absolutely nothing would be better with a clean slate?
Don't get me wrong, i do not expect such an old tablet to be fast but it shouldn't be slow as fuck without anything running on it.
Is there any good custom rom or something i could do to make it faster so i can use it for web viewing, comic books and movies without it pooping itself.
Yes it is rooted.
>yes it is rooted
Then go on XDA and flash whichever ROM has the most posts in the development thread.

Do all roms offer increased performance? I don't want a rom that bloats my device more than the standard one already is
>>53473836
Yeah, pretty much any ROM should give you better performance.
My recommendation is to find an aosp based ROM, as that will probably be very lightweight and fast.

Is ParanoidAndroid a good rom? It say it is AOSPA and i have no idea if that differs a lot from aosp that you mentioned

Either go with the pure Nexus ROM or Cyanogenmod.
Paranoid Android would probably be fine as well.

Alright, thanks a bunch!

I turned mine into a server, Running Android 5.1 32Gb version. No gapps and removed some more apps. Works great. ~600Mb ram always free.
>>53474008
That would be kinda cool to do but i don't really have any need for a server at the moment
>>53472391
i've tried cyanogenmod stable. still slow.
The flash memory is fucked. It's a well known issue with the first nexus 7s.
Something to do with trim style reading and writing not being implemented.

A-am i gonna die, anon?

mount /data as tmpfs
there you go, 500MB/s read/write

I also have the original Nexus 7 (2012). Mine runs CyanogenMod and I've done other things like Greenify to make sure shit isn't running in the background, lightweight gapps, lightweight launcher, etc. It goes OK for Netflix and emulators but it's just not a very fast tablet these days.
I also have an original Galaxy Tab 10.1 and that's literally useless. Won't even play 1080p, it never did.

>Greenify
it's worth?
>lightweight launcher
like what?
>>53474616
Greenify makes apps go to sleep when the screen is off. It basically hurries along the built-in Android sleep methods, it's not a "task killer" which is shit.
I use ADW Launcher EX with a very simple config.
There was a post on xda about flashfs or something similar, it significantly speeds things up because ext4 or fat or whatever is the default filesystem is ridiculously slow on flash memory.
