Depends. If you're going to be gaming a ROG series laptop would get you the most bang for your buck. If you need a workstation laptop you'd need something with an actual workstation card (worse for games than a gaming card) with an appropriate CPU (e.g. xeon) which I've seen only in MSI laptops, which are overpriced in general.

compare a 1500 dollar alienware laptop to nearly any other laptop for the same price. You get a shitty gpu, and old haswell processor, no SSD, minimal RAM, and a worthless piece of junk that lights up all pretty. This gigabyte laptop has significantly less aesthetic value, but has one of the faster skylake processors, a gtx 970M, an SSD, and DDR4 RAM

see that wasn't so hard, if you want to find a decent laptop/notebook you only have to look in your price range. and 15,6" is the recommended notebook size since it offers the largest screen without going overboard in the dimensions.

and by the way, I recommend msi if you want to buy a notebook. they may not have the best price/performance ratio right now but they are not far off and the build quality on the few I have tested are quite good and feels more quality like than any other non-mac portable PC.

Assuming the only thing I intend to do with it is browse the Web or edit text documents, I'd spend about $30 - $50 on a used legacy laptop and put the rest of the money toward something else, like basic living expenses.

What am I missing? The latter weighs more that's it pretty much. Everything else is the same. Cooling issues maybe? They have the same number of hardr-drive bays (e.g. m2 supported), same screen quality (FHD/IPS), same HDD (7200 rpm 1BT), and both come with Win8.1.

I think that a lesser graphics card would be just fine.

A gtx970m with only 3GB would be enough for most newer games without AA on ultra or high.

Thing is that laptop isn't a good choice compared to alternatives like ROG series laptops since the former only comes with 2 USB 3.0 ports while the latter has 4 3.0 ports and 3.1/Thunderbolt, in addition to Vsync (usually).

Only redeemable thing is that the CPU is better on the Gigabyte laptop than the ROG laptop I have in mind ($1200 -- same price range), i7-4710HQ vs the i7-5700HQ in the gigabyte laptop and the graphics card has more memory, but less RAM (8gb vs 16gb.)

Even though you can replace RAM, you can't replace/add faster USB ports and built-in Vsync. Essentially, the issue is:

i7-5700 HQ + 8gb ram + 6gb gtx970m + 2 USB 3.0 + No Vsync ---vs--- 17-4710HQ + 16gb ram + 3gb gtx970m + 4 USB 3.0 + USB 3.1 + Vsync. Tough choice desu.

Wrong, but thanks for playing.

Go to Alienware and configure what you want. You can get Skylake and the best mobile GPUs. Then before checkout click to chat with customer support. Tell them you have a coupon that isn't working. After a few minutes chatting, you'll have saved 25-30% on the best laptop available.

I love mine. It can handle anything I throw at it and it's pretty thin for such a powerful laptop. No cooling issues either.

And yes, I know it's $250 more than $1,500. Just suck a few dicks, OP, and you'll have that extra cash in no time.

I'll just take the $1500 and walk off because powerful laptops are defective by design.

How the heck do they manage to keep it so light. An ASUS ROG laptop weighs about the same (~6pounds) for 960m models and adds an additional 2 pounds for 970/980. Probably the battery is a bit less beefy I'm guessing, or the fans are smaller/simpler cooling. Pretty damn good for the price imo.
>>
I buy new parts for my desktop with the 1000, and weed with the rest.
>>
>>53472675
I think just having it in a smaller form factor than the ones like ASUS helps with the weight. I was shocked at how thin it was when I took it out of the box for the first time. The battery lasts at least 4 hours without gaming.

I just love the fact that it doesn't have any of the gawdy gayming looks to it so I'm still able to look relatively normie when in class with it.

>>53468754
I buy a 500 dollar thinkpad and spend the $1000 on something useful.

Just got an Alienware a few days ago
i7 6700HQ

The most powerful thing you can buy for 1500$ is a 970m and maybe 16gb RAM, standard i7.
I'd probably go with the MSI Stealth Pro.

He can get a 980m with 4GB and a 128GB SSD instead for $1630. The Gigabyte at some $1750 seems worth it but some people just don't have that kind of cash.

Think about it though, for $120 you get an additional 128GB of SSD space, 4GB more VRAM for the 980, and a more lightweight aesthetically pleasing design (no gaymer shit, no muh raptor vent)...

You actually do get all of that in an Alienware laptop you mindless cuck:

i7-6700HQ
16GB DDR4
970m
120gb SSD + 1TB Fusion Drive

$1500 with a student discount.

It's likely going to be an HP Elitebook. They go a little cheaper than the Macbooks, Precisions, and Thinkpads.

It's going to be used. It's going to be somewhat small-ish.

This is a possibility
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Precision-M4800-Laptop-15-6-UHD-3840x2160-Intel-i7-4810MQ-16GB-1TB-K1100M-/291619761537?hash=item43e5e46d81:g:Ts0AAOSwLzdWTTSP

Add a SSD to it with your remaining money.
>>
>>53468754
A raspi and tiny screen or something.

The ratio of power-to-cost is almost certainly ideal, and any additional money can be reused elsewhere. :^)

I buy a macbook, sell it, then use the money to put together a fully specced T60 with 1600x1200 ips. That will probably come to 300-400$, so I can pocket the rest of the money.
>>
>>53475240
Why stop there? Just keep buying and reselling macbooks until Bill Gates asks for your secrets.
>>
>>53468754
A Thinkpad x220 for 300 bucks and spend the rest and cocaine and bitches.

some 10lb ASUS ROG laptop. Just remember to replace the garbage-ass trackpad driver
