no non-free software gets installed by the installer, even if you enable non-free repos. This includes drivers and firmware. Unless you explicitly load it from a separate drive. Enabling non-free repos must be explicitly done. IIRC debian uses a linux-libre kernel.

Basically, if you want to install anything that is non-free, it must be done explicitly. The *only* reason its not FSF endorsed is because the installer facilitates the enabling of repositories containing non-free software.

There is no one true definition of free software. In some ways I would appear to be more lax that the FSF (for example I would consider Debian to be 100% freedom respecting), but in some ways I am more strict (I do not think it is okay for hardware to contain proprietary firmware; fsf thinks its okay if the firmware is built into the hardware, but not if its loaded from the hard-drive of the computer. i do not think it is ok at all)

I was a long time Debian user. I first used it (and Ubuntu) back in like 2003. I switched to Linux as my primary OS in 2010, the distro being Debian. I had a few maybe weeks or perhaps a couple months where I might use an Ubuntu flavor as my primary, but Id have spans of years of Debian.

Since Debian switched to systemd, I have lost a lot of respect for it. I have went from encountering practically zero bugs over years period to encountering multiple over days.

My only point is that I now consider Debian and Ubuntu to be extremely similar to each other. To answer your question, Ubuntu has additional software, and makes install proprietary GPU drivers extremely easy

>You are running Debian stable because you prefer the stable Debian tree. It runs great, there is just one problem: The software is a little bit outdated compared to other distributions. That is where backports come in.
>Backports are recompiled packages from testing (mostly) and unstable (in a few cases only, e.g. security updates), so they will run without new libraries (wherever it is possible) on a stable Debian distribution. It is recommended to pick out single backports which fit your needs, and not to use all backports available.

In people born before ~1994 we would consider this level of deficiency in attention span coupled with complete cluelessness about the tech you use a sign of retardation.

Learn instead of raging.

Some Debian basic basics:
https://www.debian.org/releases/index.en.html
https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-ftparchives

In fact, if you're going to install Debian, you really should read the website because there is a lot of good information there, for example advice on how not to break your system. I don't understand why you would just download something and then start raging.

>>
>>53463606

It doesn't throw you into the deep end like gentoo, but does force you to learn how2terminal, unlike ubuntu.

It was my first distro when I switched from windows. I had some issues with networking firmware (very confusing for a winbabby) but I gitted gud enough eventually and have never looked back.

If you install now, OP, I'll help you out if you have any trouble and post on this thread.

You shouldn't. What you have to do is download every OS with every different DE and try every single one of them in VMs, and choose the one you like most. Takes time, but it's the only good way to choose wisely. I chose Debian 8.3.0 with Cinnamon because I like Windows 7.

Yes they do lmao.
>>

>>
>>53463728

It's sensible. It's essentially the most normal dist.

Red Hat would be the most normal but it's more geared towards implementing infrastructural stuff. Debian is geared more towards conservatism and having lots of packages.
>>
>>53473967
You would be retarded to use a server os on your desktop.
If youre looking for a rock stable distro that you'll never need to reinstall use slackware.
If you use debian as a daily driver you literally don't know shit.
Debian is godly on servers though.
>>
>>53474005

> trolling this much

Yes, I used Slackware as my first dist too back then.

But no, Debian is not an exclusive server dist. It's a general use dist.
>>
>>53463606
you shouldn't, install gentoo
>>
>>53474046
Sure, and you would be retarded to do so.
There's literally not a single reason to put up with apt on a day to day basis. Slackware is better for stability, arch and fedora are better for general usage.
>>
>>53474093

Fedora is not better for general usage. In general, any red hat dist is worse for any environment where the machines are not centrally managed.

Debian is a bit more informal but a buttload more pragmatic and also has much more packages.
>>
You shouldnt

Install devuan instead

Stable releases are supported ridiculously long periods. It works fine.
