A lot of the time, you don't really care about how the software works, but that you can use it.
While it is possible to create something in FreeCAD or whatever, you have to spend a lot more time and and use a lot more 3rd party tools to create the same parts and drawings you can in inventor.
You can make the same videos, but when you can't offload tasks to the gpu or you can't use multiple cpu cores to speed up the process, it is not just a matter of "learning the interface".
It would be kinda cool if people were willing to pay the same amount for free software as they do for those proprietary tools.

This. Transferring large amounts of data from an external hard drive on Linux almost always crashes it unless you do absolutely nothing while it's in progress. On the other hand, Windows does file transfer seamlessly (a little lagg here and there, but a total crash is very rare).

If a company writes software that speeds up my development time by anything more than an hour and costs less than a hundred bucks it's immediately paid for itself. Free open software is awesome if you're living off the government and have time to learn a program that hasn't changed in 10 years, but some of us have real shit to do.
