Does anyone use Linux? Last time I used it there was no iDevice support, I'm not expecting to be able to use it but unwound plug my phone in to charge, sotiemes I could write music to it, other times a dialog box would pop up "device not supported" and my laptop would freeze, then I'd have to reboot.
This means I couldn't use wine for iTunes since the laptop would freeze

The UI's written in Swift. You can use GNUstep to write Swift applications outside of OS X.

Yesterday I got an used iPod Touch 4, 8gb.
Works like a charm, but it seems that every single app I try to install needs iOS7 to work. Is there a (simple) way to get around this? Can I get an iOS upgrade on this thing?

No, I think houngan select app version using iTunes, or you could jailbreak it, and download the version of the app you need and install it. Most iOS users are up to date so this isn't s problem a lot of us have, try googling around and using apple support forums
