Just how important are surge protectors?

Moved into a new room that got completely new rewiring and they installed an 8 socket wall outlet.

The temptation of not having a long dildo hanging out won't leave me alone but I don't want to blow my PC either
>>
My old PC CRT monitor fucked up without one. When you get light flickers, those surge protectors usually stop the brief gaps in electricity.

I think anything with a good power supply or connected with a power brick is fine to plug into the wall.

>surge protectors

Just spend a few extra bucks and get an UPS.
>>
Surge protectors are placebo consumer fear mongering lies.

>When you get light flickers, those surge protectors usually stop the brief gaps in electricity.

There's so much wrong in this sentence it's not even funny. Surge protectors do just that, they protect against surges of extra electricity. You need an uninterruptible power supply to stop a gap in electricity delivery.

>ruining your PFC powersupply with a cheap-ass UPS
>>
>>53459658
My shitty ups killed three of my PSUs, recently got one with a nice sine wave output, feels good
>>
>>53459658
>PFC
>paying money to fix literally imaginary power consumption

good goy
>>
>>53459741
I don't care about power consumption, it's just that the best PSUs are PFC. And you will ruin them with a shitty UPS as >>53459740
found out
>>
>>53459435
>a few extra bucks
Only if you want a shitty simulated sine wave.
True-sine wave UPSs cost well over $150 while a simple surge protector will cost less than $50.
>>
>>53459822
Jam a capacitor in the outlet and voilĂ , poor man's sine wave
>>
A good surge protector will have a few of these inside it arranged in parallel.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varistor

Varistors prevent transient voltages from wrecking your electrical devices.

If you spent money on a top-quality PSU there's no reason why you shouldn't be doing the same for the UPS. It's like buying an exotic sports car and filling it up with standard gasoline.
>>
>>53460487
I have a top quality PSU but a basic sine-wave UPS is all you need. Pricier than a cheap one but still reasonable.

Top quality UPSs are double-online units which are insanely expensive. I'd love to have one though.

I had a usb drive get fried because my pc wasn't in a surge protector once during a storm

I feel very lucky it was only that one usb drivie died
>>
>>53458730
>they installed an 8 socket wall outlet.
that doesn't sound exactly legit
>>
>buy expensive surge protector for expensive PC
>Find out my house's electrical outlets aren't even grounded

well shit.
>>
>>53460706
>Can't tell if an outlet is grounded
>>
>>53458730
I lost about $700 worth of audio equipment in a power surge

Surge protectors are always worth it, spend a few bucks just in case and it will save you more in the long run.
>>
>>53461535
Not everyone has a multimeter to check them.
>>
surge protectors don't really do that much, if you're serious about electrical protection for your PC you'll want a UPS that does line conditioning.
>>
>>53462120
Quality surge protectors have wiring fault indicators.
>>
>>53462120
>Remove outlet cover
>Inspect wiring
>No meter needed

>this kills the normie
>>
>>53462298
>implying I'm not lazy as fuck
>>
>>53462498
No, I'm implying you're stupid as fuck.
>>
>>53462871
Is there anyone stupid enough to not switch off the circuit breaker first?
>>
>>53458730
>installed an 8 socket wall outlet.
100% not legit

Always buy them, they're cheap insurance against frying your electronics.
