Is WD Red and Purple good as normal storage drives?
Should I just buy Green instead?
Is Black a meme?
>>
>>53445677
Reds have longer warranties
>>
>>53445694
It's 3 years the same with Purple though. Black has 5 years.
>>
>>53445677
Reds are for RAID and Purples are for things like writing a couple dozen security camera feeds to disk at the same time, I'd just go for a Green if you're just going to be storing movies and shit on it.
>>
Green for /g/ tier use.
>>
Is red okay to use for like 24/7 seeding and transferring of chinese cartoons? Thinking of getting 3tb one to replace the 1tb Blue doing it at the moment.
>>
>>53445677
If you care about you data go with Re (not Red, RE).
>>
>>53445886
>using datacenter drives in personal computers
Are you stupid?
>>
>>53446183
>not using enterprise equipment
>>
>>53446183
So its ok to have top OC CPU, 2 flagman videocards in SLI/Crossfire, but when it comes to reliable storage you just dont care at all? Thats /g/ for you.
>>
Is the Elements external drive any good?
>>
>>53446361
All those CPUs and GPUs that /g/ retards like to show off in speccy threads are still consumer products.
>>
>>53446726
By and large external drives tend to be the cheapest lines. Better to get a tough, reliable 2.5" drive and stick it in a good case.
>>
>>53446784
So they just getting spooked by the words "enterprise grade" and such? Or they just want to "consume" and dont care about quality? I just dont get it.
>>
>>53446806
I'm doing a clean format and I'm looking for a cheap but reliable external to dump my shit in.
>>
>>53445677
>Black
Overpriced but superior to many HDDs
>Green
Absolute garbage. Never buy green.
>Red
God tier NAS drives, but expensive.
>>
>>53447360
>Absolute garbage. Never buy green.
It's okay for storage as long as you access it only once in a while.
>>
>>53445677
What about Blues?
>>
>>53446836
I guess they're not stupid enough to use datacenter equipment for consumer purposes.
>>
>>53447403
>5400rpm
Just get Reds for more reliability.
>>
>2016
>WD
>>
>>53447443
I have a 7200rpm blue though
>>
>>53447477
Good luck finding one bigger than 1TB
>>
>>53445857
yes Reds would be better for that use
>>
>>53447456
WHAT ABOUT MAXTOR?
>>
>>53447490
Yeah good point, it's only a 1tb
>>
>>53447397
Lol, no its NOT okay.
The access time on your data and transfer times will literally drive anyone mad who wants to work fast and get shit done.

On top of that, there are better drives for the same money so there is no reason to buy greens, except if you care about the almost non existent power saving, noise and heat reduction that you get.

Greens are fucking garbage. Deal with it.
>>
>>53447456
Nice chart
Now where's source
>>
>>53447557
it says backblaze right on the fucking image.

are you blind or just retarded
>>
>not having unmarked WD drives
>>
>>53445677
Green - Storage drive, slow
Blue - Normal user, normal drive
Black - Gaymer, fast drive, reinforced quality inspection
Red/Purple - NAS / Server, reinforced quality inspection
>>
http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Desktop-Hard-Disk-Drive/dp/B013HNYVCE
I'm confused werent WD supposed to discontinue greens and just focus on the Blue for standard use?
>>
>>53446784
>>53446836
>>53447429
Enterprise grade > Consumer grade

Enterprise grade also means its pricier because its made with better quality and inspection.

If you going the way with hardcore builds then why use normal hard drives if off the shelf drives are easy to get too? I know its harder for different type of parts, but drives are no problem.
>>
>>53447542
Y U MAD? Greens are great for mass storage, I have a bunch what I use as external storage for storing shits, are you jelly because you can't afford them for your storage needs and still use DVD's?

Also only a retard would literary WASTE money on great drives if he only accesses them maybe twice a year.
>>
I have a black, and it works perfectly while having 4 years. It's also pretty fast for a 7200rpm HDD, like 130MB/s sequential reads.

Just never buy anything from seagate or another meme brand.

Fuck off retard.

I use greens for storage, offline storage. My workstation uses Blues and I have only SSD's for storage on my gaming rig....

Said the guy who buys GREENS instead of 2x4tb reds like me.

>jealous of greens
Wheres the fucking logic in buying poorfag edition greens and calling me poor?

You are fucking retarded, gtfo this board and kill self you illogical fucking moron.
>>
I use a Red for general storage. My movies, music, and Steam folder sit on a 2TB Red. Performance is pretty good, but it's louder than either of my Greens. Nice thing about having a Red is that I can get another drive and put it in RAID 0.

I have two older WD Greens. One is from 2009 and the other is from 2011. They're quieter than the Red, but the performance is bad. Never put an OS or your Steam folder on a WD Green. If you can't afford a big SSD, go for the 7200 rpm Blue.
>>
Blues are the new greens, same thing renamed.
>>
>>53448446
NOOOO?! I just bought a Blue...

Those numbers are from a datacenter, it's not a scientific study. The number of drives they had for each manufacturer is different, so each manufacturer will have a different confidence interval depending on the quantity of drives.

For example, for 2TB drives:
>They had 4716 HGST drives, 288 Seagate drives, and 126 WD drives
>Because of n, the failure rate for HGST has a 0.5% range, the Seagate failure rate has a 7.3% range, and the WD failure rate has a 15.1% range
>>
I'm using 4x4tb wd reds drives for my home server/lab and couldn't be happier. No failures for the past year and a half. They are a bit loud, but I believe I only notice their noise level because my main rig is built with ssds and is comparatively silent as fuck.

No issues with speed or performance with what I use them for.
>>
>>53447494
Do I need multiple or what? It's not a proper server just a computer that only seeds.
>>

Enjoy your backdoors

Is there anyway to put my current 4TB drive in RAID 0 without having to back up its data to another drive? I don't have any drive as big as it.
>>
>>53449090
well i highly recommend RAID-1 at least always, though you dont *need* it. RAID-10 would be better yet.

My server has 2x2TB Reds in RAID-1 and I have been completely satisfied; they saturate my gigabit ethernet network easily and are extremely responsive. been going strong 24/7 for 3 years now, though only really transfer data for minutes a day
>>
>>53447525
about maxtors:

>tfw my maxtor SAS disk worked just fine from 2006 to 2015 and is still fully functional but not in use anymore

if i ever get another server with SAS slots i will probably use it as os drive or something till it fails
>>
my 1tb black is a long standing friend of mine
