not same anon but this isn't true at all. I live outside the city and I still get speeds like pic related all the time. I almost listened to the "sprint has bad networks" meme and was about to chose t-mobile.
Heres my 3g on sprint, I usually get 4g except my building is in a blind spot it seems.
