How much thermal paste should be used on a cpu?
>>
>>53428006
all of it
>>
>>53428027
If you only use a small tube of it go and buy another and use half of the second one as well
>>
Enough.
Small rice grain in the center, and squish the heatsink onto it.
>>
>>53428006
Don't ask /g/ on this one bud.
>>
The amount used in the pic is good.
>>
>>53428053
Did this and ended up with a cpu temp of 96 c, i took off the heatsink and found that the thermal paste had been burned. I cleaned it off then used a pea sized amount and spread it with a credit card. I got the same results as last time. Is this because of an issue with my cpu and/or heatsink or is it just me being stupid with the paste? It used to average around 45 and would go up to 80 under load

Are you using mayo?

You're useing some exotic overclocking paste that's for use with nitrogen you dumbass
>>
>>53428152
I normally just take a shit on my CPU and press the heatsink on
>>
>>53428149
is this real life?
>>
>>53428157
The center of the spread had turned black on both the cpu and heatsink. Dont know if that means it burned, but I presume that to be the case due to the high temps

Use the Coollaboratory Liquid Pro thermal paste its the bet performing one you can get your hands on. In the picture shows the paste spread out 100% metal
>>
>>53428244
You will never get your cooler of this thing of you want to change your cpu
>>
>>53428282
Twist and heat up your thermal paste
>>
>>53428177
See
>>53428163
It's insulating not for transferring heat. That's why you burnt it.
What type of paste did you get? Who recommend it?
>>
>>53428163
What type should i use then? I dont know what type im using as it was given to me with the label covered with paste, but it used to work well for me

I got it from a friend who builds pcs for a living. He taught me how to build one 4 years ago and gave me what was left of the tube of thermal paste. I just replaced the paste on my pc for the first time
>>
>>53428391
Literally anything other than what you have. It's burning at 90. That is Pretty much load temp.
>was working prior
Hmm. What have you done other than pull it apart? Any overclocking?

I haven't overclocked my cpu or done anything unusual to it. Thr only thing I've really done to it since getting it 4 years ago is just now having tried to replace the thermal paste
>>
>>53428537
Nope. Should I when replacing paste?
>>
>>53428613
Only thing I can think of is that you forget to plug in the fan. Doubt something got damage to cause this. Maby borrow a mates cpu and test that. If that overheats could be the mobo but that's unlikely. Or try yours in a mate's one.
>>53428635
Only if you know what your doing. It's not nessary, it gets you around 2-5 degrees cooler. If your into overclocking it's worth looking to. But practice on cheep cpus first.
>>
>>53428734
I plugged in the fan and made sure that it ran after. So I think its either the thermal paste or the heatsink not being screwed in properly
>>
I added toomuch and now my q8400 idles at 40 celcius.
>>
>>53428853
Your gonna have to take it to be test benched. We're all out of ideas. Sorry we couldn't do more.

I do 5 small dots. A square pattern of dots around the edges and a dot in the center. Obviously pretty small dots not pea sized. Never understood the small grain of rice meme. Look at stock CPU coolers or any aftermarket cooler. There's a decent later of that shit on there.
>>
>>53429135
No problem! I appreciate the help. I'm headed to a tech store later today for a new monitor so I'll ask about it there and get one of the brands of paste recommended in the graph. Thanks!
>>
Is paste even necessary?

I just stuck my cpu cooler straight on it.

First time i built a PC. CPU temps have been fine.

Thermal paste only fills in the micro gaps in between the two metal surfaces that should be as flat as possible.

Proper heatsink placement and contact is far more important than thermal paste. There is obviously a difference without thermal paste, but as long as there's a good metal-metal contact, CPU won't burn.

Does your CPU even have the tangy zip of Miracle Whip?
>>
>>53429444
I thought stock coolers had pads on them for heat dissipation. In the instructions for the motherboard and cpu installation they never mentioned paste.
>>
A dot, a dot, a dot will do.
Anymore than that is too much glue
>>
>>53429259
That's because OEM chinks have no idea how to properly apply the stuff.
>>
>>53429552
Top zoz
>>
>>53429497
You're retarded, your CPU won't "burn" but it will throttle down to shit-tier performance to avoid "burning" because it's getting much, much hotter.
>>
>>53428152
Underrated post.
>>
I just stroke my dick on the cpu then put the heatsink on top of my jizz. I get really horny knowing I'm having such intimate contact with my computer,
>>
>>53429521
Stock Intel coolers come with paste already applied to them. The first time you mount them you don't need to use any other paste, if you're happy with what Intel gives you. You probably shouldn't be, since their shitty coolers can barely keep a stock i7 under TJmax at full load.
>>
>>53429589
Not really, no.

If you make sure there's a proper contact between the CPU and the heatsink, the purpose of thermal paste is minimal, because there's nothing better than a pure metal contact.

I myself sand the top slightly everytime I replace the thermal paste, and make sure pressure between the two is applied evenly and there's a proper contact. Without thermal paste I get the kind of temperatures some low grade overclockers get with more expensive stuff. With thermal paste, there's a slight improvement, but nothing too important, and considering I need to replace it at some point, it's pretty much a waste of time.
