This. Every fucking time I give VLC a chance, this is all I ever get. That broken-up satellite image on a rainy day. Or just plain gray with some moving shapes. And all anyone ever says is "IT'S AWESOME IT JUST WORKS HURR YOU MUST BE WRONG VLC BEST".
Seriously. I fair better with WMP + CCCP, even though I know it's bloat and induces vomiting. Fuck VLC with a rake.

You have to at least believe that it not working AT ALL, as you've described, is abnormal.
I've always used VLC as a backup player. It sucks, but it plays back nasty broken avi files pretty reliably.
