So I noticed that all the stereotypical fedora'd hacker bros at my uni put electrical tape over their laptop webcams

Is this really a sensible thing to do?
Or is it more of a fashion statement?

It's paranoia that some NSA employee cares enough to watch them masturbate to anime. PROTIP: They only do if you are a goodlooking woman

herd mentality

HURD mentality.

they desperately seek out self-validation and friendship, so they use that tape as a way to attract more stereotypical fedora'd hacker bros. or they saw someone do it in a movie. im projecting the truth

for anyone really paranoid, they'd just disable it at a hardware level

>mfw paranoids cover their webcam with tape but completely ignore the built in mike that eavesdrops on them
point that out to anyone you see with tape over their webcam just to watch their face

I just do it for random skype vid calls.

A piece of tape over the lens is disabling the webcam at a hardware level. It ensures that nothing you can possibly do in software will get you an image of what the webcam is pointed at. Software can't take the tape off.

There are NSA backdoors in laptop cameras that can see though electrical tape.
>>
>>53402008
>implying gubment firmware can't turn those webcams into infrared cameras that can see through the tape
how refreshingly naive anon
>>
>>53402008
Heat up the wires around the webcam and hope the glue softens enough for the tape to fall off.

But seriously, covering the webcam is stupid and retarded.
>>
I've seen all kinds of people do this, not at all stereotypical fedora'd hacker bro's. It's mostly the intellectual non-conformists that do this, I don't think it's a fashion statement, but more a political one.

Yet.

just unplug the webcam and mic from the motherboard. easy peasy.

Realistically it's paranoia. There's definitely a sense of security that comes with it, as using laptop webcams was a *huge* source of masturbation videos going online for a while. It didn't have anything to do with the government. IIRC, there were even programs as easy to use as aircrack that would load a piece of software onto a computer to take care of all the handiwork.

If I'm on the road and need to use my laptop for porn, I'll usually take a post-it or business card folded over my webcam.

Honestly, I wish laptop manufacturers would stop putting shitty webcams on their laptops. Either put a usable webcam on the thing, or don't put a webcam on it at all.

Thanks I'll just put tape over the mic
>>
I just cut the connector for the camera and mic since I literally never and will never use them

>implying you can't disable it at the software level or if you're really paranoid just unplug it from the mobo and use an external mic when you need one

Nothing says "i care about my privacy and freedom" like using a OS so botnet you have to tape your webcam so you don't get spied on. I guess giving up all your personal files and web browsing habits is fine though.

honestly see no reason to do this, a sufficiently paranoid person should just open the laptop up and disconnect the webcam and mic and to blacklist the kernel modules for these devices.

I dont even think that webcams are in demand anyway, nobody wants them on their laptops instead of normies, but they would be buying either smart phones or surfaces anyway.
