I've only noticed Far Cry 4 and Dying Light ever using up around 3.6 GB of VRAM at 1080P
Although GTA V with the settings cranked up can actually get up to 4 GB even exactly.
I have an 8 GB 390x, I know you'd see a major performance hit in the scenarios I'm describing.

Also I have a 144 hz free sync monitor so i can go over 60 and tell the difference. But even Witcher 3 uses like 1.5 GB of VRAM, Fallout 4 is between 2 and 3. There aren't very many games at 1080p that come close to hitting the 3.5 barrier in my experience other than the ones mentioned above.
I'm sure in the future it'll be a bigger issue though.
