Is it worth moving to SV for a job offer from $BIG_TECH_CO? The salary is double what I'm making now writing shitty internal apps for paper pushing companies but barely enough to afford a one bedroom with SV prices. I'd be leaving a girlfriend behind too.
>>
>I'd be leaving a girlfriend behind too.
She's already cucking you behind your back, it's for the best.
>>
>Good job prospects
>Girlfriend
>Doesn't live with parents
Run. Get out of here before the autism drags you down to it's own level
>>
You'll be spending more than half of your salary on renting a tent in someone's backyard, three hours commute away.

Sure, pay is double. But rent is triple. Fuck CA real estate. Unless you have a family member there don't ever expect to own a house within the next 20 years. Enjoy your shitty 500 sq ft appartment for $2500 a month.
>>
>>53373411
Everyone in SV is a faggot so you should fit right in. Just share a house with other faggots, work extra hard at work to prove how much of a faggot you are and before long, they would of burned you out and dumped you for younger cheaper monkeys, faggot.
>>
>>53373483
don't forget to make a shitty porn from the office
>>
>>53373411
Do it to build your resume. It will help tremendously to build your career.
>>
>>53373411
Depends on what you are doing. I am just a shitty sysadmin in SV making 80k. My buddy is a rockstar class devops engineer making 130k.

The difference is I do windows and he is a perl/ruby/linux god.

I am renting a 2 bedroom apartment in union city for $2600 a month.
>>
>>53373464
My apartment is 900 square feet and 2600 a month.
>>
>>53373615
If you're moving in the next month I may have a place for you for half that just outside the city. I'm getting out of there soon and might need to sublet for a few months
>>
>>53373663
I prefer to be as far away from san francisco as possible, thanks for the offer though.
>>
>>53373673
I don't blame you
>>
>>53373606
The rent is going up isnt it? Im leaving this place after graduation
>>
>>53373464
It's really not that bad, especially if you can find work up in SF instead of the peninsula.

I might be spending less on rent elsewhere, but going elsewhere also means degraded job prospects and more limited choice. It's ridiculously nice to be able to walk out of one job and into another without even really trying, and that's something I'd lose if I conceded and worked for BoringEnterpriseCo out somewhere in flyover country where rent is cheap. Working at BoringEnterpriseCo also makes for a fiercely unimpressive resume.

For reference, I'm an iOS dev working in SF.
>>
>>53373411

I live in SV and do this. If you can live in a 500 square foot room with 4 Indians, and live paycheck to paycheck while making 6 figures, SURE! C'mon over!

Average prices are $2500 a month for 600 square feet. More if close to San Fran or Palo Alto.

Don't believe the commute times on Google Maps, LIES!

I also got a place to sublet for you.
> fresh breeze
> earthquake proof
> rich landscaping, forestry
> climate is warm. Is wet maybe few times a year
> doorbell you cannot ignore
> SF faggots will love to come and visit
> smells better than most housing complexes in the area

make a badass friend to split a room with and learn how to apartment shop. I'm in SF living in a building built within the last decade with full appliances, in-unit laundry, etc and pay ~$1650/mo, splitting the apt with one other person. It's not only manageable, it's comfy.

the trick is to try harder than scrolling through 2 pages on craigslist and calling it a day
>>
>>53373917
forgot to mention, the apt is ~1000 sqft

If you save half way decently you wont be living paycheck to paycheck. I've been living on $1000 after rent per month in SF and currently make $95k

>Captain's log, stardate 475834.2: The replicator in my quarters is still broken and all attempts to contact engineering for repairs have failed.

I'm also moving to SF in June, if its a company people care about on your resume its worth a few years of shitty housing, plus salaries jump quickly and usually come with equity
>>
>>53374047
don't forget that if you're even half-decent as an engineer you'll have connections out the ass in no time, giving you a even better selection of jobs and potentially making it easier to get your own projects/companies off the ground
>>
>>53374085
>>53374085
True, I'm nonengineer and already it gives my resumes a lot of head turns in my freelance work on the side
>>
>>53374085
this. there are a lot of strong reasons to do this in your 20s, which is why so many people do it
>>
>>53373464
Do you even understand how math works?
>>
>>53373411
>barely enough to afford a one bedroom with SV prices.
Compare to current living situation. If you have no problem affording a 1br where you're at now, why would you move?
>>
>>53373578
Silicon Valley is just a meme going slowly down.

Why not? I can live where I want.
>>
>>53376534
i mean there's no space for it

No hostels?
>>
>>53376575
why would a hostel let you have space for a sekret lab, letting you put all the equipment and stuff in?

I bet there are a lot of communes you can join

Get a mobile home and keep it parked at your company's parking lot.

Check out the other tech hubs as well, I decided against going to the bay area because of the cost and I'm happy I did. I'm making around 120-130k in total comp in Austin which is pretty awesome. I'm also hearing good things about Portland, Denver, and other growing hubs.
>>
>>53373464
I had to do a little conversion
how is 500 sq not comfortable for one person and ocassional girlfriend?
>>
>>53373411

Move to GA or Texas. Atlanta and Houston have tons of tech jobs to fill. I've gotten job offers from California companies that paid maybe 10% more than what I make in Atlanta, but my 4700ft^2 house costs what a studio apartment in CA would cost.
>>
The only way I'd move to the SV is if I got a million dollar investment and the VC requested it and paid for everything. Otherwise it's not worth it.

I make around 80k USD in Europe netto (let's make it easier and say 6k USD monthly netto, health insurance, social security etc. all included).

I spend around 800 USD on rent, 400ish on food so I save over 4k USD monthly. Have a gf, a nice dev. community I meet once a month, a huge skatepark so relax my brain at, a huge aqua park with a surfstream. All in a tiny town with a bit over 100k people.

Fuck SV, and to be honest, fuck the US for that matter. Life here's way better.

Not to mention that the water from the tap is cleaner than from your shitty Nestle bottles.

There are decent tech jobs that allow you to work remotely from anywhere.

but muh communication
>>
>>53373932
That's even less than 500sqft per person if you share a kitchen and a toilet.
>>
>>53373411
There is a site called bankrate that will compare the cost of living and contrast your income between the two places so you can see the difference. Really useful of you're already in the USA.

Do what homeless /g/ city dwellers do.

Sleep in your car.
Get a 24 hour gym membership and keep fit.
Use the gym to take showers before work.
Use free Wi-Fi at the gym, library, or any of the many free hotspots or your data plan.
Get external battery packs for your computer and phone.
Save up tons of money and build your resume until your income is finally large enough to get a decent apartment.
Live the dream.

You can search the archive for other posts by the homeless for more ideas.
