i use to have a nitro 390. got it when it came out, so it was the first before the backplate version. the cards performance was great, outside of the games randomly crashing after a few hours, like BF4, which there was a 90 page thread on AMD's offical forums about such crashing that dates from june until AMD locked the thread in october from "getting enough feedback", the card put out way to much heat because of its high power draw.
i had to run a custom fan profile to keep the vrms under 85c. the card ran "cool" after that, but that heat had to go somewhere, and it was my room.
so i returned and bought a 980. would of went 970 but 3.5gb gate. the 980 has been amazing. much faster than the 390 and runs SO much cooler because it uses so little power compared to the 390. my room temperature dropped 4c. no having to do no fancy custom fan profile or anything like that.
the 3.5gb is what makes the 970 vs the 390 a hard choice. the 390 is truly a house fire, but the 3.5gb gate is 3.5gb. 1080p in most games its fine but 3.5gb.

Off the top of my head, Solidworks, functional modeling for Autodesk stuff, video rendering (though that is more GPU dependent) and just to see how far I can push it. Knocked it back down to the standard 4.0Ghz after I was getting some strange goings on and decided to nix that idea. Still works fine, just a little slower (no shit).
