If you disagree, you are a paid Windows disinfo shill trying to destroy the growth of mainstream Linux adoption.

Ubuntu is the ONLY viable mainstream distro and they've paid their dues over the years MORE THAN ANY OTHER DISTRO BAR NONE!!! Mark Shuttleworth posted CD copies of Ubuntu FOR FREE to anyone anywhere in the world before people everywhere had internet.

What has Ubuntu offered the Linux community? The only thing I can think of is marketing. They don't contribute upstream, they dont add any useful software to the ecosystem, and they push out garbage that literally nobody wants.

If you want a beginner distro, Fedora is by far the best option. If you are a little more advanced and want something different, CentOS and Debian are both solid choices. Support developers that actually add something to linux, don't use the crappy outdated shit that leeches off it.
>>53366503
Im enjoying Sabayon right now. Fedora is also an excellent option if you don't know how to troubleshoot very well.
>>
>>53368059

No it's not, RHEL is. CentOS is used mainly in the web hosting field. CentOS is RHEL in every way, shape and form but it does not have the support, warranty, etc... that RHEL gives you (that's what you are paying for). Also, CentOS is starting to lose traction in the web hosting world now that CloudLinux (another paid solution) can throttle accounts easily and acts almost like a container for each user in a shared environment.
>>
>>53368074

>If you want a beginner distro, Fedora is by far the best option.

No, you do not want Fedora as a beginner. Fedora is a test bed for RHEL and even though they claim pain free rolling releases stuff is more then likely going to break on you every 6 months. I have been using Fedora for the past 3 years and I love it, but I would never suggest it to a beginner.

CentOS is great for server use, not so much as a desktop. It's stable and has long term support, but dated packages.

I dual boot OSX/Windows, not that hard to do as long as you have compatible hardware

I don't really use the OSX side of things though because I can just do everything on Windows so booting back and forth only for redundancy is just a waste of time

Not going lie, ubuntu is the defacto-standardo for dev work. If you tell someone to apt-get install `these packages` to compile, you know exactly what to install, while with other distros you usually have to translate. It's easier to make your program work across distros too.

Also the package management is good.

Mint (or Fedora if you want to get a job with linux) is the only Linux you should use on a PC.
>>
>>53366503
>and has the most support for software and updates
Why is this a requirement? Are you going to use all possible software in the world? How about you figure out what you actually need and drop these inane "the most support for software" requirements whatever it means.

Any distro is customizable, but if you want to build it from the ground up, you could start with a bare bones Debian (testing) or even minimal Ubuntu. But again, considering you're moving away from Windows, I don't see how "the most customizable" is suddenly something extremely important and why you'd have to config everything yourself when you don't even have a clear idea about what's available and how it all works. And it's not as if you can't customize any distro that is not a hobbyist Frankenstein of some kind.
>>
>>53366503
What does it mean to have "the most support for software and updates"? Are you looking for a rolling release with large repositories? I'm not sure even you yourself know what you want to be quite honest.
>>
>>53368310
In other words, you don't really have any tangible basis for your recommendation of Fedora as a beginner distro. It's just because you happen to use it.

Korora is a better (Fedora-based) beginner distro as not everything in Fedora is ready out of the box.
>Korora is a Fedora Remix, meaning it ships packages from the default Fedora repositories but also a number of other packages (often ones that Fedora cannot ship directly). We also make changes to the default system, whereas Fedora generally sticks to upstream. For new users, Fedora can be tricky because it doesn't include many of the extras that users often need, things like media codecs and some proprietary software.

If hes taking classes Debian might be closer to what they are using. Ubuntu is desktop/workstation stuff. That doesnt tend to show up with the guys working in the server room.

Almost agree. If you use Gentoo/Arch or some shit because "lel i can install it so i not pleb" then this shit is true. Using Gentoo/Arch because you actually take advantage of its unique features is a different story. 99% of gentoo users probably fall under the former

no it is debian based, but it is not the same exact thing.

1. Ubuntu forked from Debian in 2004
2. Ubuntu releases a new version every 6 months while Debian releases every 2 years
3. Ubuntu comes pre-installed with Mozilla programs while Debian runs modified versions of the same (iceweasel, icedove, iceape)
4. Ubuntu has a company backing it while Debian is decentralized
5. Ubuntu is the top Linux distribution with Debian coming in second
6. Ubuntu is the most popular Linux distribution and Debian is somewhere down the list
7. Ubuntu is better for beginners compared to Debian
>>
