OpenOffice died because nobody trusted Oracle to manage it correctly, so it was forked into LibreOffice and pretty much everybody involved moved over. Oracle were then left with a useless dead project, so they washed their hands of it and donated it to Apache.
LibreOffice was already well-established by that point though, so most people just stuck with it. Apache are still releasing updates to OpenOffice, but it hasn't had any serious development in years and LibreOffice has far surpassed it at this point.

There's other decent office applications like WPS Office (Chinese clone of Microsoft Office) and Only Office community version.
One is shit, the other is crap.
I just have a virtual machine with windows cuck on it and use microsoft office. Nothing from work ever formats right on libre office or open office.

The difference is mainly in the development. OpenOffice was bought by oracle and later given to apache. LibreOffice is comes out with more versions and updates way more frequently. Basically same UI, same code, and same tools. It's usually whatever you're exposed to first.
