I have the makings of my desktop, and while assembling it I realized that PC Part picker told me my MOBO(Gigabyte Z170XP) and CPU(i5 4460) are not compatible even though it said they were when I originally ordered all my parts. So will they work together or is it telling the truth this time?
Just make sure that the socket of the motherboard and the cpu is the same and you'll be golden.
i5 4460 is an 1150 socket CPU whereas Z170XP is an 1151 socket mobo, it won't work.

There are a few exceptions, LGA771 worked in LGA775 sockets if you put tape on a few pins. AMD also allowed AM2/AM2+ , AM2+/AM3, and AM3/AM3+

Well your choice is RMA the mobo and get some H97/Z97 board, or RMA the processor and RAM
The new procs are way more expensive for minimal performance gains, ditto with the RAM; but DDR3 prices will only increase from now as production tails off, and it's nice to be up to date on standards.

Yeah I already filed a return for the RAM, but gottta wait on PST to return the CPU. I got an nvidia GTx 960 for the GPU, 1TB of HDD, 120 GB SSD Patriot torch, and EVGA NEX 650G for the PSU. I think all in all this is a pretty good build if it wasn't for my blunder with the CPU and RAM.
