How hard is it to remove the bloat in ubuntu?
I heard it's as impossible as trying to manually add more ram into an Apple machine.

on the ubuntu front, just use the mini.iso and do a minimal install. Also Xubuntu allows you to do a minimal Xfce install.

Removing unity or lightdm will fuck things up. As will installing an alternative DE. Don't do either of those. If you want a different DE, use one of the flavours. If you want to be 1337-tiling-wm-only420packagesonmymachine, install debian minimal edition or arch if you want up to date software.
