What went wrong?
>>
People got romanticized by the medium-to-high income level of the computer world and every kid between the ages of 14-19 has been told their whole life that they are great with computers (mostly because their whole family is shit at them) and that they should do something with computers for money.

People also think it's easier than it is because they've only ever had to manage their own private computer experience or one user at a time.
>>
Money hungry faggots
>>
A generation of people who got told they would be the next bill gates because they knew how to operate a computer.

>>53324956
The market demanded commodity programmers. While you want to keep a few geeks around for innovation, the dudes on the right are in it for the dough and will do as they're told. Furthermore, you can have them in customer facing roles without worrying about their hygiene.

Guys on the left are making 7 figures as higher up management as we speak.

You guys ever used Socrative before?

A lecturer at my uni decided to use it to do a quiz in a lecture then go over the answers which are below in the PDF.

Some of our teachers use it for tests on the iPad.

We can open our books on the background so it's fucking retarded

I started college back in 2007, and at that time there were only 2 schools in the state with a CS program, and both only had a handful of students. My freshman class had around 10 new CS majors (only 5 of us graduated.) I actually got a devops job at that same college's CS department about 2 years ago, and shits unrecognizable compared to when I was there.

Now, every college in the state has a CS program, and my alma mater brings in about 100 new CS students a year (and growing.) The graduation numbers are usually the same as they ever were.
>>
>Jacket and shorts
If it is so damn warm you cannot wear regular pants, why would you wear the jacket?
You already decided that you don't care about how you look, so it can't be that.
Mens fashion is rather hard to fuck up.
So I guess they have achieved something

I'll bet only one of the colleges is accredited though.

Don't worry, it'll change soon. CS departments are heavily subsidized by the athletic departments.

On question 8, why did so many people say that "return 0" is the significant part of that application?

None of these questions has anything to do with CS though, clearly your teach just wanted to if you were complete retards

What is this course about, proper handling of mice or what? Hopefully you guys manage to finish on the right mouse button this semester or you'll have to resort to a Mac.

Seriously though, even students in rural India without access to actual computers can do better than that, hopefully you're at least from some socialist country and don't have to pay for that shit but I guess not.
>>
>>53325336
It's a prep look. This fashion derives from New England old money styles, so it usually has a lot of naval elements (e.g., little anchors on things, boat shoes, etc.) because rich people by the ocean keep boats. The jacket/shorts combo is to keep your lower half cool and your upper half covered because when you're in a boat your legs are inside but your top half sticks out and there's a lot of wind on the ocean.

So that's where the look came from, at least.
>>

I feel bad for you.
Please don't go to these classes and just do something more productive at home.
>>

The classes are okay, it's just the majority of students seem to not give a fuck about cs at all or are just retarded.

>>
Kids started majoring in CS because they want to make video games.

75% of CS students at my uni want to make vidya games.

Kinda makes me happy because it lowers the competition a lot.
>>
>>53328553
>lowers the competition
Demand and supply. When the supply of CS grads is higher than the demand, competition for jobs that require a CS degree is sky high.
>>
>>53328577
he means though there's lots, they're all going to be looking for work at shitty videogame startups, so other applicants for work at whatever tech firm he applies for will have experience in programming nothing but shitty 2D engines for indie games.
>>
>>53328577
Yah but when 75% of CS graduates are NEETs at heart who only want to make video games and beat off to anime it's literally impossible not to be the best of the best.
>>
>>53328577
I think he means that they won't actually be looking for the job he wants.
>>
>>53328627
>they're all going to be looking for work at shitty videogame startups, so other applicants for work at whatever tech firm he applies for will have experience in programming nothing but shitty 2D engines for indie games.
This logic is flawed because of two reasons
1) the amount of "serious"/"competent" CS students is probably the same as before, meaning that the competition for those firms are probably just as high provided that the number of those jobs remain relatively constant
2) those game devs will realize sooner or later that they wont get their dream job, and start taking "boring" jobs instead
>>
>>53328635
See >>53328669

It's just more people all in all meaning that the number of people he has to compete with for the job he wants is still the same in best case.
>>
>>53325167

Fucking bullshit.

You need to have people skills to make management. That's what all these nerds on /g/ do not understand. You can program all day, but if you can't confidently talk to other co-workers and lead it will never matter.

Original commenter here.

I forgot to disclose that I don't really care about CS students because I'm doing IS and will be their manager some day.

You're doing a good job, worker!
>>
>>53328669
Learn some reading comprehension, I know how demand and supply works stop reiterating, the 'increased supply' is negligible BECAUSE the number of competent cs students remains constant, the disillusioned developers are still inadequately prepared for application to 'boring' jobs even when they do try, si will often retrain or end up as sysadmins on $30k for the rest of their lives

a talented programmer as anon claims he is will still only be facing the dedicated few he would have faced in 1995-2005

Depending on the college, the guys on the left are most likely first year CS major who all might possibly fail out of their CS classes second semester.

I think CS curriculum's do a good job weeding out people shown on the right of OPs pic. Now if OP said the guys on the right were people in bootcamps, then I think that would be more realistic.

>>53328923
I meant the guys on the right

Back then, people didn't know computers were to pave the way of the future, so CS was disregarded as a "nerd" degree. Nowadays, the Internet is overpopulated & everyone & their mom uses a computer. So, it's more attractive.

Information Systems is the people's person degree. It combines the best of CS, IT, and BUS classes into one streamlined degree.

It sets you on a path for management and six figure salary. It allows you to take almost any job in the field with a little practice.

I put up with CS autists on a daily bases and laugh internally at them because they will never be as successful as me. I already make 35k as a 19 year old junior in college while they beat off to anime and video games all day and fail Calculus 2.
>>
>>53329673
Go figure people who have no social skills don't go far in a career field that actually involves a lot of interaction with real human beings.

I think that's something a lot of 'beards don't realize. Until you land a cushy remote job where you just manage databases in your underwear, you're going to be talking to a lot of people and you're going to need to know how to extract information from them, which involves not nauseating or offending them.
