Poorfag looking for new college computer, was thinking of buying the Acer Aspire E 15 E5-574G-75N8.
>i7 6500U
>8GB RAM
>1TB HDD
>Nvidia 940M 2GB

Price is 680, is it worth it? If not, could y'all recommend a better laptop? Thanks in advance /g/ents
>>
Mainly looking to use it for day to day life shit, docs, etc, and some CSGO on it.
>>
Specs on the hard drive? Once I got a nice HP envy 17 with similar specs but the shit tier 5400RPM 1TB hard drive made it slower than shit.
>>

>>
>>53316613
Ah shit, it is a 5400RPM HDD
>>
>>53316628
Throw in an SSD and it will be pretty sweet.
>>
>>53316642
Is it possible for me to change it by myself?
>>
>>53316647
Yes
>>
>>53316647
Yeah you can change it yourself pretty easily in most cases. Hook the old one up to a docking station and use Acronis to clone it over.
>>
>>53316665
>>53316693

Thanks guys, already looking at info. Is there any way I can figure out the form factor of the HDD on the computer?
>>
>>53316693
Why bother? Just reinstall straight to the SSD.
>>53316716
99% of the time it's gonna be a 2.5" 9.5 mm drive.
>>
>>53316716
It's a 2.5" SATA
>>
>>53316747
So the OS, drivers, etc. Will already be installed without going through a bunch of BS installations.

Also, windows 8+ doesn't have a product key and it'll need to be activated.

There's a good chance he won't have installation media.
>>
>>53316773
You're right about the Product Key, but I think they're tied to the motherboard now, so he should be gucci. Everybody should have a flash drive you can boot from and he can download the drivers beforehand.
>>
>>53316595
Better idea:
Get an a8 7600 desktop + ideapad 100s netbook for the same price
>>
>>53316748
>>53316747
Makes sense, thanks y'all. Are the rest of the specs good?
>>
>>53316876
Point is for me to have a portable computer with which i can work

It's passable. I think the next tier of notebooks start another 200 more anyway, which you can spend on a gigantic SSD and be happier than you would with whatever you have now.
What do you expect to do with this computer, anon?
>>
>>53316945
Hmm, just found a Dell Inspiron 700 for about 100 more and nicer specs. I'm hopefully transferring to UT for chemistry, so mostly documents, handling generally mid to heavy rendering applications for anything molecular based the program throws at me, and some CSGO on the side.

Inspiron 15 7000 Series
>i7 6700HQ
>8GB RAM Single channel
>HDD 1TB
>Nvidia 640 M, 4GB ddr5

Damn, I'm torn
>>
>>53316989
If that really comes with 4GB vram I'd go for it if you're a chem major

If you are doing any type of molecular visualization it's nice to have CUDA accelerated surface drawing and each instance will eat up a sizable chunk of vram

>680 bucks
>poorfag
Either get a Thinkpad like other guys leeching of their parents or throw few hundred bucks more at it and get a macbook.
>>
>>53317033
It does, I'm very tempted now

>>53317058
What?

>>53317060
Don't really want nor need a macbook, not need to be rude bud
>>
What's the screen like? Battery life?

If you're going to use the 940, this might not be such a bad deal.
>>
>>53317115
4-cell Li-Ion (2520 mAh) Battery for the acer, but the other dell I mentioned lasts around 5 hrs
>>
>>53316902
>looking for a new college computer

Sorry I misinterpreted bub
>>
>>53317110
Then get something cheaper. Most laptops under 900 bucks are pure trash, might as well get trash for 300-400 bucks instead wasting twice as much.
>>
>>53317172
It's all good bud

>>53317195
Have you looked at the specs? How is that trash?
>>
>>53317110
I'd recommend spending a little more to get into the Thinkpad range (T460p) or buying a used T440p and swapping in the T450 touchpad
>>
>>53316595
Asus X205TA for its godlike battery life. Only $199.
>>
>>53317211
Why is that?
>>
>>53317212
I need the specs, can't have a low spec laptop
>>
>>53317233
The $500->$1k range (when buying new) is a lot of overpriced consumer shit that is literally built to fail

The build quality of a business class laptop is just so much better. You get top notch keyboards and touchpads and lots of useful features like hot swappable batteries. The tradeoff is a little more weight, so when the average person is laptop hunting they can't understand why someone would pay more for a Latitude, Thinkpad, Elitebook, etc when it's the same specs and heavier for more $$$.

You can get a T440p for ~$350 and then throw in the T450 touchpad (which is much better) for ~$35. In the end you have a business-class machine that performs the same as a newer model and costs 1/4 of the price.
>>
>>53317155
That's pretty shitty desu.
>>
>>53317269
>can't have a low spec laptop
Why not? What work are you going to do?
>>
>>53317389
windows
>>
>>53317389
see
>>53316989
>>
>>53317416
Yes it comes with Windows.
>>
>>53317429
that's why it needs high specs
>>
>>53317427
Then I'd stick with Acer or Asus, they usually have the best specs for the price. Ignore the Dell recommendations, they are shilled so heavily on here it's not even funny. Luckily anyone with even half a brain knows to avoid Dell like the plague.
>>
>>53317204
The most boring kind of trash. Decent CPU that you won't notice in daily tasks compared to some APU or i3 from 4 years ago but not good enough for gaming to outweigh the 940M if you want to play something tasking ... then again, CSGO would run on any toaster.

What else? Some generic HDD, cancer resolution screen, probably TN too. Additionally a crappy battery. It can do exactly the same any 400 laptop could.

This is all even ignoring Acer. Getting a random cheap laptop with SSD upgrade would be your best choice if you don't want a desktop or premium laptop.
>>
>>53317427
the overwhelming odds are that if you are doing any type of QM or MM that you'll use the university's computer labs or clusters because of software licensing

They're not going to let you install spartan or gaussian on your personal machine

So you'll be using the laptop for the same things everyone else does in college--writing papers, browsing the web, and playing videos.
>>
>>53317480
How is a i7 outweighed by the 940m? They're not bad specs for the price. What would you reccomend then?

>>53317462
I mean the dell has similar specs and seems pretty good too
>>
>>53317561
Dells have garbage battery durability (low amount recharge cycles), shit keyboards and trackpads at the under $1000 price range. It might be alright for the 1st year but after that you'll be regretting it badly, just speak to anyone that owned a Dell, they almost always have negative experiences.
>>
>>53317627
I agree with this wholeheartedly

Dells (like most consumer laptops) look great on paper and in pictures but they fall apart after a year

The "1-wire" proprietary charging system they use broke THREE times on my charger, which caused me to have to buy their special snowflake power supply at $35 a pop 3 times

One by one my USB ports stopped working too, even though I rarely used them and babied the computer to hell and back

This was a Dell Inspiron 14 7437
>>
>>53317561
>How is a i7 outweighed by the 940m?
The problem is the other way around. Decent cpu - shit tier, gpu. i7 6500U itself could probably handle 99% of the games out there.

>What would you reccomend then?
Literally the cheapest brick you find with a decent enough GPU to run CSGO (or another non demanding game you want to play) that either has an SSD or can be upgraded with one. Consider used stuff too.

Use this as reference. The idea is to get shit that does the shit you need for minimal price, since shit for bit more, does the same shit.

Alternatively, spend much more for high res IPS screen, 8h+ battery life, PCI SSD and all the jazz.
>>
>>53317627
>>53317673

Damn thats fucking dirty as shit, then I will undoubtedly get the acer
>>
>>53317727
That's a preatty reasonable argument, thanks a lot. I will definitely keep this in mind.
>>
>>53316833
>but I think they're tied to the motherboard now
Should be, i cant it not being.
>>
>>53316876
>ideapad 100
That laptop he wants to buy is better and faster than that desktop ...
>>
>>53317842
No it's not.
>>
>>53316595
i have aspire e13 and build quality is so fucking shit, mousepad dies after 6 months. brother had acer v5 and it died too. AVOID acer, just AVOID it. better blow on the cold than regret later
>>
>>53316595
see
>>53315539
>>
>>53317851
Than a A8-7600, it blows it out of the fucking water, in all aspects.
>>
>>53316595
Honestly, CSGO performs decently on integrated graphics. If that's the most GPU intense thing you're gonna do, I'd look into buying something without a dedicated GPU and more battery
>>
What do yo guys think about the price for:

i7 4720HQ
16gb ddr3
7200rpm 1tb + ssd (sata III) 128gb
Gtx 970m 3gb
17" matte/IPS/FHD/Gsync screen
+2empty ram slots

Being $1200
>>
>>53320498
>17"
>laptop
Just get a fucking desktop if you wanna play games.
>>
>>53320681
My old 17" is dying. Dad spent $1200 on it 5 yeaes agl and it was pretty mediocre. Only redeemable thing about it was the gorgeous screen. Wondering if this is a waste for that price since its my money now.

Anything on 15" is too small for me at this point. Been 5 years and I've gotten used to it. I like the spacious screen for writing papers and gaming too I guess. The graphics card is a bonus for me which I'd rather keep.
>>
>>53316595

Go play with it in store and check the feel and the build quality. It's a college laptop so it'll get thrown around and mistreated quite a lot.
>>
>>53317321
Can you recommend the z book
>>
>>53316595
I own a Acer Aspire E 15 E5-572G-75mw for the last year and something and it runs smooth, the keyboard and mouse pad is horrible tho and you don't get capslock and numlock leds. It overheats when gaming without an external cooler but it copes with most games, yours should do more so
