if anything it's a good idea because of rotational velocidensity. unless you have an SSD in which case you're fine.

My Dad had an external HDD since 2006 for "backup". It fucked up like a year ago and all the data on it was lost.

Turns out he was just saving literally everything on there and the internal was basically barren.

This seems like a fairly common thing with people. Is the concept of redundancy in its simplest form really that hard to understand?
>>
>>53312133
Just point her to the hydrogenaudio wiki and let her learn
>>
At least your sister *wants* more quality, even if she's doing it wrong. Most normies I know are happy with 64 kbps MP3s downloaded from YouTube.

Hearing the difference now isn't the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange...well don't get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren't stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you'll be glad you did.

Oh, so that's why the audio quality of youtube videos from a few years ago is worse than that of videos posted this year. Google didn't store the videos in a lossless format so it's literally rotting on their servers. Or does this data decay only apply to mp3/audio data?

I was originally told that they would be trashed, but there also seems to be a bit of confusion as to what the district is doing with them. The sorry excuse for a computer teacher believes they are going to be trashed. I am afraid so.

That's one of the things I like with Apple. With Time Machine they built a backup solution so easy you can't fuck up.

The school I went to had a "sysadmin" that was actually a Linux enthusiast. He wanted a part of the network to be composed of Linux boxes for those who would want to try it.
