Just reinstall. If you are using Loonix on a production computer you asked for it.

chroot in with sysrescuecd, the Ubuntu installer disc or whatever.
back shit up.
try apt upgrading shit.
if that fails, reinstall.

this
Linux is for middle school aged "computer geeks" and servers. Nothing else.

I'm so sick of you /v/eddit idiots shitting up this board.
I tried sudo dpkg --configure -a
Lets hope it works
>>53305071
Did you try booting into the recovery mode (selected via grub)? You could then try to restart the upgrade with
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
You may need to run
sudo dpkg --configure -a
to fix the partially installed packages.
>>53305219
I ran this but I went straight from the failed boot screen by pressing ctrl + alt + F1, then I logged on. Tried Sudo apt-get upgrade, and it told me something was wrong and I had to do sudo dpkg --configure -a to fix this..
Now its setting up and installing stuff.
I'm new to this, lets hope it works out.
Thanks for helping out.

>implying I play gayms
I use El Capitan for most work but sometimes use windblows in a VM for MS office and .net shit. My employer actually pays for Adobe CC which I have to use from time to time so Linux has no use for me.
>>53305219
Is there any difference in doing it like that ^
And doing the same thing in recovery mode?
Open a livecd.
Tar your home folder.
Reinstall ubungo.
Put your home folder back.
Reinstall your programs.
100% recovery, thanks to Unix-like behaviour.

Not to upset any of the wonderful /g/ users (you guys are great) but this DESU senpai. Linux (great operating system BTW) doesn't have many applications that Microsoft Windows has, like Cortana, the personal assistant, or the slick new Windows 10 GUI. I had to write my own driver for my Linux operating system, so it's a good thing I'm an experienced programmer.
However, as an experienced programmer, I find Microsoft Visual Studio to be the best collection of programs and languages, that can only run on the advanced Windows Operating System. For some reason Linux does not support these simple tools, even with the emulator WINE. I also have used special Windows themes to "rice" my desktop. Now I feel like a hacker :). Is there anything Windows 10 cannot do?

Yeah re-image from your daily backup. YOU MADE A BACKUP RIGHT? NO BACKUP!?! OKAY, NOT A DIZASTER, JUST REVERT TO THE LAST SNAPSHOT. NO LVM, LOL YOU WERE ASKING FOR IT.
>>53309099
It's ridiculous that you have to be careful not to install malware whenever you want to install a program in the first place. Windows is inherently prone to malware.

Ubuntu is the worst distro ever made, just google "upgrading ubuntu +data lost" or "upgrading ubuntu +recovery". You can read for hours.
I once lost my complete system and never installed ubuntu again. And I have also herad this story by friends of mine.
Just try to use a live cd, try to get as much stuff as still possible and the install something differnt.

fag
>>53311436
Or maybe that's because it's one of the most widely-used distros, which means more people are discussing it? Not to mention it's the usually the first distro newbies try to use, thus it's more likely that they'll fuck up and lose their data.
See for how long you can keep Arch alive without having to manually fix something that broke after an update.
>>53305219
This
>>53311436
Versions, sure, but LTS's are supported for years so who gives a flying fuck?
Just standard upgrades? You're full of shit unless it's X related issues and if you can't fix those, you shouldn't be using Linux in the first place.
>>53305071
>FAILED Failed to start LSB Virutal box linux kernel module
Have you tried to reinstall virtual box?
You should have tty access (ctrl+alt+f1) so you can fix it
>>53306994
Not to defend windows or anything because it is pretty shit. But 90% of apps auto update themselves so this argument is pretty invalid.
OP here, thanks for all the advice.
I made a backup last week so I'm fine, but It would be real nice to get some of it back.
I ran sudo dpkg --configure -a and let it work during the night. When I woke up today I got a few errors. I tried apt-get update and rebooted.
Now it boots to my login screen, but I cant move my cursor and when I type my password in it sort of signs in and then returns to the login screen straight away.
I run dualboot with windows 7 and Ubuntu on two different drives. I would like to get it working again but maybe I should just try a new distro? I have used ubuntu for years but I can't say I know linux. I usualy get what I want when I sit down, but I have no idea what the output means right now so I'm not sure what to do.
>>53311706
Well, yeah I can sign in using ctrl alt f1.
But is virtualbox really a vital part of my system?
>>53312870
Any kernel module is a vital part of your system.
