I've just upgraded to ubuntu 15.10. Came back from bathroom to find it had restarted by itself :s doesn't load normally with interface just presents black page with white writing:

Some clown has taken you to the first tty, press ctrl + alt + F7 or ctrl + alt + F6 if that doesn't work,
type your login name and then return
then type your password and return
wait for a bit and it will bring up a prompt that looks something like this:
system information
username@machinename ~$
type:
who
so you will see:
username@machinename ~ $ who
press return,
info will come up, write what you see,

the "Login: "
is a prompt for you to login, ctrl +alt + Fnumber takes you to that number tty(teletypeterminal) your session is managed from a tty, and either x has crashed without a dump(unlikely) or you've accidentally moved to the wrong tty. if ctrl + alt + F7 doesn't work login,

login and type who, this will tell you everyone who is logged into the machine and on what tty(only you should be logged on). It should tell you if you are already logged onto another tty with an x session running,

In future you should post for help there instead of starting a new thread.
You seam fairly cautious, but always be careful about what strangers on the internet tell you to do to your computer, especially here and never run an rm or chmod unless you understand what they mean and what files they are affecting.
