Does anyone here do any kind of freelancing? Whether it's web development, writing or software development?
I'm just curious to know how you obtained clients and got your toes wet so that you could get a push into the right direction.
It's infuriating to view any web development or writing related job only to see a dozen Nasheed and Rakeshs bidding on the job for an inhumane rate. You know the quality is going to be garbage and the work probably won't ever even get done but most of the people there just want slave labor with high expectations.
Elance/Freelancer/ODesk/Marketing forums like WF and DP are the main sources of clientele that I've tried so far to no avail. The only people who add me are the cheap broken English clients looking for rates that would put me lower than a minimum wage worker. If I was hard up enough to chase pennies, I'd be submitting applications to McDonalds.
Being in a small town only complicates it a bit. There's no development companies or agencies around here that focus in web development or writing.

If you are qualified then advertise the fact that you really know what the fuck you're doing and flaunt those qualifications.

Pretty much this. None of you trying to get into freelancing should bank on making a killing at freelancing forums and places like Odesk that are infested with hundreds of thousands of foreign workers. However, you CAN find quality clients on there. Stop bidding on shitty jobs. It's like going to Burger King and telling them you want $20 an hour. Why would they pay you that? They can easily just find some degenerate losers with no ambitions in life to work for $8.50 an hour. Even if you're the best burger flipper and box-folder in the world, there's no demand in places like that for quality workers. All you need is mindless drones to churn out shit.

Most quality work comes to you. You have to actually establish yourself, set up a website and market yourself to real companies. Not these piss ant idiots who think they're going to build an empire off of slave labor, just like everyone else is trying to do.
When you bid on a project, bid higher than other people. If they're looking for the lowest bidder, you won't win anyways. There is ALWAYS people willing to bid lower than you to scrape some peanut payment.
Those people cycle through freelancers quicker than women in their early 30s cycle through men.
Most freelancers are too scared to set a price that they're really worth. When I did writing, I told people that content started at $5 per 100 words. Most people would say "fuck that" and go on to find some $1 piss writers. They'd also never get organic traffic and would always be right back where they started looking for more $1 writers in a vicious cycle.

Market yourself to actual companies, law firms, SEO companies and clients that set a high budget

Stalk the higher ups. Then get into social situations and convince them how you could do shit better than them in a non autistic manner. Despite what skills you may have on the technical aspects your people skills could be what sets you apart from the next street shitter. Good luck to you anon.

Did a Bsc thesis in a field thats not related to IT, that involved me programming a thing. The teacher got impressed, got me a job at uni. Few people got interested, made a couple of programs for them, roumors spread etc. Now i have 2 job offers else where, and 4 outside work to be finished.
Basicly you need to impress the right people with the right contacts.
