People always talk about how making side projects is good for getting hired.

What the fuck do I make? I'm decent at programming I can just never think of anything to make that would be new or do something better than something previous.

At this point I'm considering writing a program to recommend suicide methods.
>>
Don't bother, that's just a bad meme.
>>
What kinda job are you trying to get? Just make a website that you can view on your phone and show an interviewer, "hey look I did this using PHP/MySQL/CSS/whateverthefuck you're looking fuck"
>>
>>53242564
Go into one of those programming threads where they roll for things to make and just do shit from the table and stick it up on github.

It isn't so much about making things for a purpose as it is for having code examples up where they can easily view them and see your competence.

>At this point I'm considering writing a program to recommend suicide methods.
Good idea. It's always better when you write something you need.
>>
>>53242564
You are not unique. Got a problem? Millions of others are likely to have the same problem. Solve it as a project.

Example:
>wish I could wake to a different tune instead of the same alarm day after day
>ooh, why not write an application for that?
Tada!
>>
>>53242564
That's just a meme. As long as you went to a good uni and get good grades, you'll be set. No one actually cares what side projects you do.

I hope no one believes this. If you're a programmer you'll get laughed out of an interview if you have no side projects, even with a 4.0 GPA.

Source: I'm a college dropout now making $100k/year. I released a game on steam and put it on my portfolio. Started at 40k and worked my way up, leaving each job after a year for a significant pay increase each time. I now work in LA doing VR games.
>>

There are a ton of fucking cool libs out there if you know where to look.

I like that idea, I am going to steal it. Sounds fun

>>53242966
Put it on a portfolio next to other cool shit. Bring it into an interview and if they ask, pull it out of your backpack and pretend it was a coincidence you had it. Hired on the spot.
>>
>>53242981
>bullshit from my ass
>>
>>53242966
You could do a bunch of other things. This is just a side project.
>>
>>53242989
It's called being prepared. If you had a job you'd understand.
>>
>>53243005
Do you also take the legos you played with when you were 6 to every interview?
>>
>>53243013
I'm assuming he's going for a starting position. Having simple (completed) programming projects gets jobs.

I don't know a single guy who graduated with a CS degree that I've interviewed who has had s project where he fucked with a raspberry pi. 1. It shows he knows his way around Linux, which is always a plus. 2. It shows he likes to just fuck around and experiment with things he'd have to learn on his own
>>
>>53243013
>apply for job at Lego Denmark
>have Legos in backpack

You're are going to get arrested, boy. They'll will think you've have stolen them.
>>
>>53242647
Here's the problem, most CS grads come out of uni with no experience of any kind outside of classwork.
These are the people who repeatedly fail retard tests like fizzbuzz.
A degree is next to worthless unless you're applying to a multinational firm, who still live under the outdated notion that all their programmers should have a CS degree before being allowed to put their foot in the door.
>>
>>53242633
This.

Mine might not be as broad as that, but I've gotten sick of hunting through kickass for my shows each night, and having to keep notes and shit about what shows are what day, so I'm working on a php page that has the links and names and days, as well as if theyre airing, ad each day itll show the links to that days shows.

Hopefully itll even look nice
>>
>>53243074
That's funny because every "self taught" coder I've had to interview couldn't do FizzBuzz at all.

Don't be to worried if you are doing CS and are doing fine, you are still way better than most others who can't even obey basic coding conventions. Yes, side projects are a big plus, but if you just want to get started, things are probably going to be fine.
>>
>>53243110
t. unemployable
>>
>>53243093
Not too surprising, a lot of self taught people learn in order to do some particular task they have in mind, so they learn what they need to do that and anything that comes up in needing to do that.

Honestly I am more concerned about people doing CS degrees not knowing though. They actually paid money and didn't learn how to think for themselves.
>>
>>53243189
The CS graduates who don't know FizzBuzz thing is total bullshit. I bet most of those people are really dropouts or rejects who lie about having a degree.
>>
>>53242906

i think the real thing here is that you have self-published on steam. that is far different to a side project, i.e. fuck around with code and put it on github and no one uses it.
>>
Here's a funny story.

I actually got an email from someone in Spain or Portugal or somewhere over there claiming to be from a company looking to hire me based on the code I have up on github.

I ignored it, of course, there's no way that could possibly be true.

I was lucky enough that I got a job without ever doing a side project.

My plan if I couldn't get s job was just to find someone else's project on github and leach off it by contributing spelling corrections.

Try that.

Here's one of my sideprojects. I'll use it to apply as an embedded developer at a huge car manufacturer.

I also have a few mobile apps in stores because there were no apps that solved my specific niche problems (one even made me a nice amount of shekels).

Then there's a small CRM/Blog I wrote and host to write about those projects and share code.

All in all, I'm 26, just got my bachelors degree because I was too busy working and making money... got my fist job during the first semester after publishing my first mobile app.

All in all, sideprojects are not a meme.
>>

Nice. I'm 22, haven't finished school because I'm trying to not be poor. Not having a degree is hindering jobs. I've already worked on some Android apps but there ain't shit for Android dev near me. I need a web project instead

You don't need anything new or better. Just do something, like a shitty CRUD web app. The thing is to prove you can actually program, not that you're a creative genius inventing new things every day.

Just do something you think is fun. Sometimes when I have time to waste, I just clone games. Also learn some applicable skills. CS stuff is good and all, but you should probably learn how to make applications and useful scripts on the side.
>>
>>53243821
you think H-bridges is what it takes to build a real car?
>>
>>53243954
>>53244214
It's an IoT RC car, can be controlled with anything that has a wifi connection and a web browser. When it looses contact to the ones controlling it, it drives back to the last known GPS position where it had contact and lurks around. It also has 4 distance sensors so it cant's hit into things, and decide on what side to turn to escape collision.

I've bubble wrapped it and sent it to the car manufacturer including my CV and the position I'm applying for.

Not the first job I'll get with an application like this.
