netbeans is just slightly better.
I use Java for Android. It's not bad. Especially now with Android doing AOT instead of JIT. Loading Java applications on a desktop OS sucks though.

Because I got a good paying job with it. Java server/backend stuff is in huge demand. I can deal with the language verbosity and bad choices. Knowing Groovy is also a plus.

C and C++ are very similar. You can write C code and have it compile to c++ easily, you just need to import the older libraries. Java and JavaScript are kind of similar, but not really. JS is weakly/dynamically typed and interpreted, whereas Java is mostly strong, statically typed, and compiles to proprietary byte code to run on a JVM. C and C++ are mostly the same except c++ has some syntactic sugar, additional libraries, OOP, and a slightly different compiler. At heart, they're really similar as C++ was built from C. They're still 2 different languages, but they're VERY similar compared to other languages. Java is built from C, but it's nowhere near as similar to C as C++ is.

It's a shame that Java itself is so shit when the JVM is actually pretty nice. I wish there was a statically typed JVM language that wasn't Java.
I use Java for the shitty front end of a database. I have a small foreign languages school and I keep track of the stuff with it, basically students information. The back end is a MySQL database
