Are your parents technologically illiterate?
>>
>>53225282
Luckily no.
>>
My mom's a CS graduate but sometime in the early 2000s she stopped giving a shit about keeping up with tech and converted to Apple. Growing up with thinkpads and getting a few handed down to me was nice. It was kinda frustrating, growing up with parents who knew more about computers than me, especially since one worked IT in school district and had all the latest software to monitor computer usage. There were a few times when I did everything right from clearing caches and deleting search history to going in and making sure nothing was left in tmp directories and I still got caught somehow looking for porn.
>>
Dad's not, he was able to install some porn-blocking software.

Mom's yes; been exploiting her tech illiteracy since high school. Managed to get the password to disable the software.
>password: jesuslovesme
>>
I wouldn't say "illiterate", but they sometimes ask me for help if they experience an issue.
>>
> Dad used to be fine, until he had his weird breakdown and lost touch with reality. Now he's constantly manic and thinks nothing is working even though it is, but then doesn't care. Perfect end user.

My dad is high end server support for hpe. He helped write hp 3k. So yes.

My mom is a high school head mistress (principal) and she rolls out new laptops every 18 months, has a robotics team for her school. And helped pioneer Wikimedia, then Google docs. Her next adventure is gonna be cloud based curriculum for homeschooling. She also helped write the common core. I've probably said too much.

Tl;dr: dad's been with hpe for 30 years. Mom's been right beside him using the tools he provided to the max. They're both 60. My dad's uncle is 84, he has a note 4 because of dual gsm, removable battery, and stylus. He's practically a gentooman. Iranians, right?
>>
My father is pretty good with computers, just not enough to say, make a career out of them. My mother is almost functionally retarded from years of drug abuse.
>>
Jesus....

I didn't knew you had such bad parents, /g/..

or are you meme-ing just to get people to feel sorry for you
>>
Dad is, mom doesn't really care and only uses phone.. My dad was the one who got me into vidyas in the first place, he was a cool guy
>>
Yes neither know how to turn on a computer. They have smartphones but their use is really limited to phone calls, text, YouTube, and Facebook.
>>
My mom yeah, she only plays facebook tier games and browsing forums for women

My dad knows a bit more, but still stuck on Windows and install a bunch of crapware such as super ultra secure VPN 1337 edition.
>>
>>53225860
As with most consumer products, people feel strongly compelled to complain about them if something goes wrong, and instead opt for doing nothing if nothing is wrong.
>>
>>53225282
I'm wondering how many of his resumes went straight to trash...
>>
I usually just give them an old PC or salvage my parts to throw something together for them...its NEW to them and they never know the difference...

Then again they do low intensity stuff so they don't really need ALOT. So when my dad is bragging about how he thinks the clearance rack 8400 GS he found must be a good decision because it's one of those nvidea cards he saw me buy once...well really that sort of thing actually does work for him and his old RTS games (and since he got it for 20 bucks it isn't a bad purchase).

So ya know...they know enough to get by with...and if they need help they call me and bribe me with free childcare haha. It works out.
>>
>>53225742
Yes. The average Iranian is very, very computer literate. Very.
>>
>>53225282
My dad's pretty decent with both hardware and software; my mom, not so much.
>>
My dad knows how to use a computer... if it is a PC from the late 1980's. He stopped caring about technology around the early 90's and thinks everything's gone to shit compared to how simple things were back then. His favorite thing to rant about is Apple whenever he has to do something complex with his iPhone (birthday present), "it just works huh?! BUNCH OF FUCKING RETARDS". Went to the genius bar with him a few times and lol'd heartily as he ranted against the poor sobs. Cloud sync issues nearly sent him into a homicidal rage.
>>
>>53225282
They didn't use to be. My mom still only struggles with non-obvious bits. Dad went full tech retard with his alcoholism and depression.
>>
>>53225282

Let's put it this way OP, I spent almost 5yrs trying to get my parents to learn how to use OSX so I could stay in touch with them. I finally said fuck it and bought them a Chromebox. They fucking LOVE it. They use it more than I use my own Mac/PC.

>>
Yes, because they can't read or write technologically.
>>
>>53225282
My dad is a CS graduate and taught himself a shitload of COBOL back when. Now he enters website URLs into Google's search bar and clicks some random shit link that isn't even the URL he wanted.

Both of my parents are very tech illiterate. My dad's side of the family is really stupid, and my mom's side seems to be sufficiently intelligent in some cases. I dunno. Seeing as how intelligence is mostly a genetic thing, I always feel I'll be stupid no matter how hard I try to inform and stimulate myself. [/blog]

Sadly yes, though it might be my fault in part, when I was a kid once my father said he wanted to learn how to use the pc so he wouldn't need to ask me every time, but since we had only one pc, which was mine, that I used to store pr0n, games and all the kind of stuff, I refused to let him use it because I thought he would fuck it up getting a virus, deleting something important, or accidently finding the pr0n folder. Now he has his own laptop with Win8 and I don't really care what he does with it, though after two years he has yet to learn how to send fucking emails... I'm not gonna spoonfeed anyone, it would only make things worse.
>>
>>53229906
You are really stupid. Intelligence is mostly an environmental thing (unless you are an actual retard, which seems to be your case).

>>
My dad always wanted into computers, he basically learned to use them/troubleshoot them from dedicated magazines he used to buy.

He can install, use and maintain a windows installation.
He can somehow walk himself through setting up wired/wireless network without having to ask for help.
That's pretty much all.

Mom's a complete illiterate.

My parents never restricted my freedom of internet access.
I once found the archives from the messager client we all used in the early 2000 on my dad's computer.
And despite the language and topics highly not appropriate to a ~12 year old kid I was never questioned about it.

My dad was like the uncle NSA.
I've been encrypting my shit since then.

I sometimes read through greentext stories on 4chan and i'm genuinely amazed how sane my parents are and always were in this regard.

...Did you even read what you just posted, or are you baiting me? This literally confirms what I just said. The end result showed that genetic played the biggest part in determining intelligence in most studies.

http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2012/06/genetic-variants-build-smarter-brain?_ga=1.166172855.821483372.1456678316

I was too lazy to find a scholarly article, but I believe I've read at least one concluding that genetics played the primary role in "intelligence".
>>
My dad cut his teeth fucking around with Fortran computers back in the day. Used to build computers back when they were known as "IBM Compatibles". Taught me how to use DOS when I was 6-7. Unfortunately, he hasn't kept up with tech. He struggles with smartphones and running newer versions of Windows past XP. It's kinda sad.

Mom was pretty tech illiterate for a long time, but she eventually figured out the path of least resistance was Apple and has been pretty good about it since then.

They both still have trouble with the concept of keeping passwords and logins they can remember. They usually have to create a new Skype account once or twice a year.

Both of them are, though my dad can at least figure out how to do shit. My mom, meanwhile, has always insisted that she knows more about computers than I do, yet made me crop images in ms paint on a daily basis for her because it's just too difficult to figure out, apparently
>>
Dad still thinks games cause viruses and slows down the computer. Even though I have built my own pc he still thinks he is right about tech related stuff.

I'm so glad I have STEM parents.

>> Mum consistently breaks a laptop every 12 to 18 months by clicking on banner ads.
tell her to use uBlock Origin
>>
Mom's an English professor who doesn't know anything that isn't MS Word.
Dad was an old mainframe hand who wrote a bunch of COBOL, JCL, and other such things way back when, but never really could into PCs of any stripe - DOS, Windows, Apple, *nix.
Both just go along with what I give them, so long as whatever I do doesn't push them far out of their comfort zone. At least I got them off IE6 and XP. Shit could be a lot worse.
>>
Dad was fairly respectable up until the mid 2000's. Was acquainted with computers and tech in the 80's and 90's and familiar with RAM, CPU and storage space, enough to get the job done. Around 2005 he stopped giving a shit and while is still knowledgeable regarding basic computer terminology, still blames anything that goes wrong on technology being shit.

Mom is not very computer literate and I have to remind her constantly how to do anything outside of playing Solitaire or going on the Internet and checking email.

It's still better than parents who don't even know how to turn on a computer, so I have to appreciate that.
>>
Dad is, he works in wireless standards for a certain American cellular company.

My Mom isn't at all.

I'm a PolySci Major/ CompSci minor, so yes, pretty damn literate when it comes to technology and technology law.
>>
>>53225282

My parents bought a PC in 1993 and they were "savy" users, understanding how to use DOS and Windows, how to format the computer and reinstall them along with partitioning the hard drive, fast forward 10 years they don't know shit and it wasn't as if things had really changed that much they had just became simpler. I left home and my dad had to make himself understand it again just so he could use them because otherwise it wouldn't work properly. Got my mom a ipad so she could use the internet without any issues at all that is one of the reasons ipads rule for older people they just werk. So I guess my dad is tech literate and my mom isn't.

Funny thing, my brother used linux for a few years back when xandros was the distro for people "leaving" windows, it was a successful switch to tell you the truth, he got tired of all the bullshit of windows and linux, he bought a mac air been happy since.
>>
>>53233739

>Are your parents technologically illiterate?
Their kids lack life skills and experience.
Their kids have a very narrow view of the world that revolves around the misconception that technology will make them rich and happy.
>>
>>53225282
My dad is "ok" with tech but really doesn't know how to do much other than use the internet, install addons, and setup e-mail and basic everyday shit. He also knows enough to backup his data at least. My mom though can literally only use Google to look up random shit. They both can only type with 2 fingers. Overall they're illiterate to me but I guess it depends on who'd you ask.
>>
>>53235440

No. Luckily for me, my dad *was* a programmer. I say *was* because he's in his mid-60's now and is the senior programmer for the whole organization. I get the impression he hasn't actually inspected (much less written) any code in over a decade.

It was badass when I was younger. In the late 80's to mid 90's, I got all the hardware salvaged from wasteful companies I could want. He always had a very cool attitude about my brothers and I having access to our own computers and never limited or questioned things we did on them. He occasionally went to insane lengths to help us with stuff.

He built a crazy serial network once because we wanted to play multiplayer doom. Another time, he tracked down a specific old type of hard drive to swap controller boards so I could recover some mp3's I pirated.

The only time he ever even told me not to do something was when I racked up a huge phone bill dialing long-distance BBSs.

My mom is fine, she just acts needy
Not that she can't do it, or can't learn. Just bugs me for some reason

My dad is tech illiterate
He can browse the internet and do basic stuff, but beyond that he is lost
When I explain how to do this he will literally write it down like including if its right or left click, if its double clock or single click.

My dad remarried some crazy woman that thinks wifi and cellphones cause cancer
She kind of knows what she is doing, but its a dangerous kind of knowledge where they think they know better than you, and that if you can't answer every question you get peppered with its some "gotcha" type shit that I'm wrong.
Pic related, its her computer.

Something easy I thought I could leave them with.
Nope.

I preach to them about making back ups of their important stuff, we will see how that goes one day.

All those virtual drives are there because she was downloading ISOs for some reason and doing something with them
its amusing, because say she needs a program to convert videos, she will download like 3,4,5 or more programs that all do the job and just leave them all installed on the PC

Or I get told to build a PC, as cheaply as possible because its money they don't want to spend, then all I hear are complaints about how slow it is.
