I'm a scumbag who don't have much motivation to do anything. I'm pretty much a NEET even though that on paper I'm still going to college. I'm enrolled because it's free. Besides, there are perks from being a college student here (cheap transportation, cheap tickets for events, no maintenance fees on credit card, etc) and I kinda enjoy some classes. But they'll kick me out by the end of 8th year. Fair enough.

So I've been trying to improve myself a little, you know. I'm already 26. I can't live like a cockroach forever, right? So since there's no job here for developers and I'm too shy for online gigs (I always feel like I'm not good enough, even though I know I am, but I always feel scared to bid for jobs), I tried to build my portfolio with open source instead. After all, people speak wonders of it, so why not?

I picked up a software that I liked and started fixing bugs, adding new features, etc. At one point I created a tool that supported that software. Licensed it under GPL 3 and released it on the software community. And that's probably the moment that open source died to me.

A couple of weeks later I see dozens of people selling my stuff on Facebook, forums and some IM chatrooms. I wasn't really pissed that some noobs were making money with the stuff that I made, what really pissed me off is that they simply didn't give me any credit for it. They removed my name from the source files. They removed the license. They didn't pointed the repository where my tool lies. They simply took my work, made it their own and started making some bucks with it. And if I were to take legal measures, I'd probably spend more money with lawyers then earn it from those little thieves.

So that's my story. I try to change my scumbag nature and improve my reputation just to have it stomped by a bunch of scumbags. I think I'm done with open source. Just thinking about working on a project and have people ripping it and giving me no credit for my work is too much for me.

not saying you deserve what happened to you , but this can be a seen as a lesson .
you should have kept that piece of code to yourself and only released the binaries
you only go open source with a license when you have a team and the means to protect your code if you get plagiarized.

Sounds to me like you hate freedom.

This is wholesale copyright infringement. This has nothing to do with open source and everything to do with fraud on their count.

Dude, don't give up. It's like they say in the music industry: if people steal your stuff, it must be good! You must be a good programmer. Keep at it!
>>
>>53209316
You weren't willing to put in an effort to spread your software, while the scumbags were.
So they made some money with it, while you didn't make so much as a reputation.
Only logical.

FOSS isn't for making money. This is well known. Also, if you can make good enough software that people can use and sell, there is hope for you anon. Move out of your area to wear jobs actually are.

Also OP is literally Van Wilder.

Hey mister, I know you like using words like cuck on this anime/slash/techloligy forum but you really should consider that it might not apply to all situations.

They violate your license. Contact the devs and politely tell them to include your license and credit you as required. If they refuse, sue or at least shame them in public.
>>
>>53209316
So, you're upset that the open source program you made, with no intention of making money off of it, is being "stolen"? Why does it matter?

You still get the ability to use it on your resume, and as long as you support the project, your version will become superior anyways. The people who will buy a program on facebook or chatrooms without doing a google search first were never going to appreciate your work. Keep contributing, make a case for yourself to any future employers. Let scammers do what they will, it doesn't hurt you at all.

Who sells software using Facebook?

Wtf are you even doing? You say you want to improve yourself, but you don't want put in any effort, all you do is whine and complain.

Somebody violated your copyright. Did you even attempt to contact them? Have you tried posting on those Facebook groups yourself telling the users how the devs are stealing your work? Instead you complain here about how the opensource sucks instead of trying to fix your own problems.

I'm sorry OP, thats shitty. Do what

Remember that it is probably the fuck up of a single person, not the team

Dude they violated the license, that's why it matters. And he has to fight it or else they might eventually claim they made it first and he just copied it from them, and maybe even sue him. I wouldn't put it past them, if they can't even follow a simple attribution clause. It might just be neglect rather than outright malice, but the corporate machine doesn't care, it will fuck over the individual every time without caring about fairness.

Anyway, since it's licensed GPL, probably best to bring this case up to the FSF. They have lawyers and will help fight your case.

These, especially the trips of truth.
This is what I donated the FSF for (yea I did, suck it up proprietary cucks). If they use your GPL code, their program must be GPL and credit you. Notify them and if they fail to comply, contact the FSF and consult them. They have some legal strength behind them.
