Asian import cars were cheap and popular with young people. Young people bought them. They were called rice burners or rice rockets because Asia = rice. Young people being the tasteless dumbasses they are started adding cosmetic alterations, spoilers, bodykits, go-faster stripes to their rice burners. This was called ricing and a backronym "race inspired car enhancements" was made up. Now the word is used, by analogy, in a computer context to refer to cosmetic modifications of the UI.

Comes from many aftermarket modifications done to Asian cars in the US. Being that those cars have a large stock of generic compatible parts and easy to modify the cars, they became known in the scene as ricing. Ok, I'll set everyone straight. Master mechanic of 10yrs here.
It originated with first Gen 4 cylinders coming on the market. American and asian would have bad carbon buildup on the intake valves causing rough running and misfiring due to the low placement other throttle body's and intake design. Oil would pool in the intake from the shit pcv systems then get sucked in to the cylinder. Causing the carbon buildup. America's solution was to use walnut shells to blast off the carbon, but still be soft enough to not damage the valves like sandblasting would. Japan had a similar fix but used rice. When you riceblast or walnut blast intake valves some reminisce will still be on the valves. Upon startup it will get burned up and smell like burnt walnuts or burnt rice "rice burner". Walnut burner sounds stupid, and rice burner sounds funny because it is slightly racist. So it caught on, and now is associated with asian vehicles. The acronyms came after, and poor people have always modified their vehicles.

Nah, I actually worked for several car magazines before the crash, now I freelance and do a lot of PR writing in the industry as well, mostly for race shops and classic car resto places.
I honestly don't deal with nitty gritty engine stuff that much, but my shot in the dark guesses would be that walnut blasting is back because of ethanol in fuel causing deposits, because of something to do with direct injection combustion chambers, because it's not as hard on aluminum heads as other media blasting, or because of some kind of environmental shit.

Actually you were close, it is direct injection and poor pcv systems. Some aftermarket companies introduce a sump in line with the pcv system to try and catch most of the oil.
With direct injection the fuel is no longer being sprayed on the valves and directly into the cylinder. That little fuel clean off is no longer there allowing carbon to build up. Not as fast as the first Gen 4 cylinders but you can see problems around 60 to 100 miles. Depending on the vehicle owner.
