>work in help desk job for about nine months gtfo because low pay, no advancement, too far, no benefits of any kind
>working in new help desk job for about six months, better pay, benefits, some actual chance for advancement (assume they're lying, but still it's nice)
>try to apply for other jobs just because
>literally not one place calls me back
>not one

I'm I fucking blacklisted? What the fuck is going on?

No you are just worthless no one wants to hire you
>>
Public job postings are usually a formality, posted out of obligation. By the time they are online, the manager already has people in mind to fill the opening. Sometimes there isn't even a job, the postings are just there to make the company look good to investors.

If you actually want to get a job you have to work with recruiters, or network with people. Get in bed with tek systems, modis, robert half and their ilk, find a couple guys that appear to know their shit and do more than match buzzwords on resumes.

Talk to those guys regularly, stay on their mind, they will share things that come across their desk that they think fit you. You'll get more action this way than you ever will shotgunning resumes to online postings.

Live sucks keep trying move on die worthless
>>
>>53192313

I've been contacted by all three of those contractors. One about a month or so back I told if I am looking for a new job I'll give him a call. The other ask for my full social security number required to look for jobs that was motifs. And Robert Half I was in contact with a guy but I went on a trip and sort of lost contact. I dint spoke with two attractive women over Skype from that company. Then I never heard from them again.

That is the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. It's such a crock of shit that I assume you must be a recruiter. Can a recruiter help you? Yes, at times. Are they the only way to find a job? Hell no. To say that once you see the post it's already filled is bullshit. Recruiting employees rarely know much about IT and are super transient. I don't know about you, but I'm not one to bank on another person, especially when they know very little are care even less. A better question is 'what are you applying for OP?' You've got 1 year spanning 2 companies doing tech support. You don't have great qualifications and you couldn't last a full year. That's a shredder resume where I come from.
>>
>>53192869

I left because my commute was over an hour, no benefits made like $13/hr. Plus they changed contractors on us about five months into the job, I had been making $14/hr before that.

I'm trying to stay at least a year in my current job maybe more so people like you might see my resume and think "yeah this guy is decent I'll give him a call."

I do find it hard to believe none of my reasons come up into a recruiters head though.
>>
>>53192869

Oh I'm applying for IT support jobs, desktop network support, maybe if I got a cert of two I would get calls, I also have a b.s. but it really is just b.s. as far as recruiters see I'm assuming

When I went to a career fair last fall at uni, all employers really did was tell us to apply online.

What does that mean? Most recruiters are simply matching acronyms from their work order to your resume.

you said pff he didn't last a year but you didn't think maybe it's because he was picked up by another place because he was very good or he wanted to find a job with actual benefits decent pay, etc.

I make $19/hr at my help desk job, direct hire, decent benefits, etc and if I worked afternoons or nights I could be making $20.90/hr, more than you, :)

It's prob the only reason I haven't quit yet or bothered to look harder for a better job

In what though. I worked IT helpdesk and I knew plenty of people with BS's and BA's but it didn't mean shit because it was in psychology, english, or history.

>>
>>53193373
When you post a job or use a recruiter you get TONS of resumes. Tons. If it's an entry level job or a sweet job for great $$ then you get even more resumes. Looking at someone's resume for a minute or less is all the first impression that most people get. If your resume sucks (layout, spelling, grammar, information) it goes in the shredder. If you have questionable things, like huge gaps, or 2 entry level jobs in 1 calendar year and no other viable work experience, your resume goes in the shredder. The ONLY way most people would look twice at a resume like that is if someone in that company HANDED me your resume. Then it gets considered differently. It doesn't matter the reason your resume looks like shit. It's your first impression and it only lasts a couple seconds at best. I don't know your tone or if you were posing a question because you didn't use any capitalization or proper spelling or punctuation. Buy I've been in the IT industry since the 90's and have worked as both a hiring manager AND an actual recruiter. I do know what I'm talking about. Most resumes are trash and end up in the shredder.
>>
>>53193450
Why didn't you try to get your CCNA?
>>
>>53192787
Most companies are switching to local 3rd party IT. Only slow moving mega corporations with thousands of employees still outsource to india.
>>
>>53193418
Closer to 2 years per stint is good. But staying at a place for 2 years doesn't mean that you are idle. You need to be A) working on your next thing (cert, skill, etc) and every bit as important B) you need to be mother fucking networking.
>>
>>53193418
>>53193413

Yup right there, if I lose my current job somehow I am FUCKED.

>>53193572

I try to get as much exposure in my current job as possible. I'm thinking of going for my CCNA, I need something and I see CCNA on a lot of applications.
>>
>>53193509
>huge gaps
>2 entry level jobs in 1 calendar year
Bullshit, I don't know what you're considering a 'huge' gap but I've gone 3 months or so without a job and I've never had a problem getting a job.

Granted only reason I went that long was because of school but still.

>>53193609
>I'm thinking of going for my CCNA
Why didn't you ever go for it in the first place? I set aside a whole semester to focus on it because I know how important it is. You should at least have your CCENT.
>>
Sounds like you have nothing valuable on your resume, OP. Go to college or get some certifications that actually are in demand.
>>
>>53193766

because I'm lazy and procrastinate a lot

>>53193810
I have a degree and had one internship during college, it was mainly telecom support though
>>
>>53193837

You don't have certs or work experience then, and don't know how to network. You can't work helldesk for a year and then suddenly become a full system administrator at a big company with a plush workload and huge paycheck.

Go get a couple bullshit certs to puff up your resume (ITIL Foundation, Apple Integration Specialist, CCNA if you want), and spend 2 years at your current job. In that two years, network. Go to local events or branch out. It depends on industry. For example, if you work in education, reach out to other schools and do campus visits to see how theyre implementing things. It's not hard.

You're at the bottom of the totem pole. You need to do your time before you gain seniority. I did 5 years with 2 promotions and got five or six major certifications before I advanced to a Technology Director role. That's at a small company of <500.
>>
>>53193837
...I mean, if you want to do networking why arn't you trying to find jobs as a NOC
>>
>>53193912

I actually applied for a NOC job, the recruiter called me then talked to me about then a week later called me saying they weren't interesting, I was shocked /s

>>53193900

Oh I'm not delusional I know I can't just move to a system admin job like that I just want to move to a job where I don't have to deal with the end user directly at this point and pays just a little better so I can move out of my parents house faster
>>
>>53193961

*interested

:/
>>
Why would employers even care about gaps on your resume? So you did nothing for a year, what gives?
>>
>>53193766
Dear Mr. Just-Out-Of-College,

Please stop telling grown-ups what bullshit is. You aren't really in a place to give advice and should shut up a little more and listen a little harder.

Love,
The world

Huge gaps, like over a year, will net your resume in the shredder. 3 months hardly registers. But I'm sure you knew that before you got all indignant and called bullshit. Also, calling people out because they didn't follow your path is top 10 stupid. Why didn't you go to Harvard and are a doctor now?
>>
>>53193961
>I just want to move to a job where I don't have to deal with the end user directly
>I know I can't just move to a system admin job like that
>I'm not delusional

You are delusional. You're between 5 and 10 years away from that stage of your career. Bust ass to advance now, or relax within the current workload to just deal with it.

You also haven't mentioned where you live. If you are in a flyover state, then yeah, you have no path to advancement, assuming you live in the US.

>>53193989

It means there is a problem with you. It means that you couldn't find a job. That means there is something wrong with you that will be an issue at this company.

If the answer instead was "I was consulting, here are some clients of mine", that's a different answer.
>>
>>53194014

I guess I am delusional oh well
I live in the midwest so flyover for sure
>>
>>53193961
I've heard of people getting NOC jobs with just a CCENT. Maybe you should get your CCNA and not get so discouraged. I know it sucks to put a ton of work into something, start at the bottom of the totem, and then still get rejected.
>>
>>53194014
i haven't worked since 2010, because I don't need to. Now I dont bother to care and just get welfare. Have 401k with 6 figures too.
>>
>>53194014
>If the answer instead was "I was consulting, here are some clients of mine", that's a different answer.

so you're saying lie and setup fake #'s to fool if they call, ditto
>>
>>53194095

Sure. Don't get caught. If you are actually a productive employee and not a fuck up and were, say, traveling for pleasure, okay.

>>53194076

That doesn't apply here.

>>53194059

Move. There is no opportunity there. SF/NYC/Portland/Seattle/LA are pretty saturated but there are many jobs available for young talent. Places like Atlanta (among others) are starting to boom and have very cheap housing. Look outside of your little area.

If you want to be big mr. bossman CTO or CIO you're not going to be staying in your little podunk town all your life anyway. Get a jump and move now. This is real life, as >>53193993 said. A job isn't just going to show up.
>>
>>53193993
>grown-ups
You're on a japanese cartoon image board

>calling people out because they didn't follow your path
I'm not, but working towards that cert now gives him a goal while in the meantime gaining experience at his current place of employment.
>>
>>53194159

I've been thinking of making the move to someplace like Seattle or Portland for a bit though. I have some money saved up about $17k in total as of now. Even with that chunk of change places like Seattle are very expensive though, only like 77 days of sun a year I fucking hate the sun
>>
>too socially retarded to network and meet other people
>going to hate working no matter what

Should I just get a factory job until I win the lottery or kill myself or something
>>
>>53194328

Just keep going don't give up
>>
>>53194263

What the fuck, that's a year of living expenses in Seattle or Portland if you are modest. Move tomorrow. If you are single, go. There is so much opportunity in those larger cities, and as a single person you can easily find a roommate situation for extremely cheap.

If I didn't have a serious relationship and multiple pets, I'd seriously be doing this tomorrow. That says a lot considering I have a great job currently.
>>
>>53194394

I want to but my parents are very controlling everytime I bring up wanting to move out they say that's ridiculous you just live at home and if you leave you'll be broke and nowhere basically

maybe I should, give it another six months or so have at least $20k saved up, find somewhere to live there and pack my shit and leave
>>
>>53194390

I just don't even know what to do. I'm halfway through a Computer Support Specialist degree that I just picked because it was easier than an actual CS degree and picked online classes so I could just cheat my way through it. I still like computers but like everything else in my life it just got stale and boring. I wake up every day and realize that I'm just setting myself up for a deadend job but I have no motivation to change myself.

I just want to play video games man
>>
>>53192869
it's actually the most sound advice on the topic. no one "lands" a good job -- they network and get contacts beforehand. sometimes recruiters can help in the process.
>>
>>53194527
>I want to but my parents

I stopped reading here. You are a pussy. Straight up.

It's your fucking life, not theirs. Take your money and go. Why are you letting someone other than you control YOUR life? Why are you sitting around waiting for something to occur? What do you anticipate is going to happen if you keep doing what you're doing? You aren't going to advance to anything major in the midwest. Don't you want to life a fulfilling life? There is SO MUCH out there in the world. Don't be an emotional slave to someone just because they produced you.
>>
>>53192323
th-thanks
>>
>>53194587

yeah pretty much, my mom has discussed with about living in FL shortly after they move there because she doesn't want to fly hours and hours to visit me

Then I tell her that's very selfish but she doesn't quite understand why I think, maybe it's because my parents were born in another country and hold different values or that's just an excuse and they're not mentally healthy people.
>>
>>53194569
The networking is true enough but in my experience I've had equal success with online applications as in-person
>>
>>53194640
>born in another country and hold different values

That is a mentality of people born in other countries. They often end up leeching off of the children. It may also be an excuse.

Protip: you can plan without them knowing. Commit to being at a location on a certain date and just go. Make sure your money is secured in an account that you control, not your parents. Pack 4 changes of clothes and your laptop (buy one if you don't have one), move to the area you want to be in. Stay at a cheap AirBNB or hotel for a week or two while you find a roommate situation long term, or a cheap studio. Take a week or two to get familiar with the area. Then start applying for work. Alternatively, start applying when you're flying there. Hit the ground running.

If you already have a car at home, drive instead of flying. You have a small "home base" with you in that case, and you can take more of your possessions. Seriously, go, you can do it. I wish so much that someone would have given me this advice when I was younger. I eventually did it and am happy with my life now, but I'd have an extra 5 year jump on my career had I just had someone tell me what I am telling you now.

>>
>>53194721

That's some good advice. I think I want to be at my current job at least a year though for good measure
>>
>>53195167

Cool. Use that time to do research. Find a city, perhaps take a short trip even.

For example, you could fly to Seattle, explore, then rent a car and drive down to Portland. You could return the rental there, then fly home from PDX. It would give you a good opportunity to get acquainted with the pacific northwest.

If you really wanted to, you could drive all the way down to San Fran and fly back from SFO. Just clarify with a rental agency beforehand. I did this last year (but went in reverse from Portland to Seattle) and had a wonderful time.

Get a couple of easy certs in that time period. Here's the ones apple offers online: http://training.apple.com/certification/osxyosemite - take the Mac Integration Basics 10.11 test online, it's like $65 and can be done with no prior knowledge if you've ever used a Mac before. Get a second computer in front of you and google the answers if you're lost. Study for ITIL Foundation. You can get it after about a week of easy study. Another super easy one. Do a good job at your workplace, network with the people there, have a good attitude.
>>
>>53195244

Would that really help though I guess it could make a good resume padder, funny I was thinking of visiting Seattle in April, I have a vacation week that month
