On my server? Easier to get everything running well, like SMB/NFS shares, torrent server, web server, "native" ssh implementations (and a much, much comfier shell to work in if you need to work in the shell), and it's a secondary box that I can just dump files into a certain folder and they'll compile in the background.
On my desktop? Well, I'm usually on Wangblows playing muh gaymens or shitposting, but installing the Debian .iso I already had on my flash drive and doing "sudo apt-get install gcc gfortran octave" was honestly faster and a better solution than using that piece of shit Cygwin, not to mention there's nothing to distract me on my Debian install when I need to just werk.

You can physical corrupt the windows network stack by using application level software that works on blocking IP connections. Peerblocker can affect your entire stack and even on some system, corrupt the entire stack.
