I don't use a smartphone but would like to listen to music while I'm outside.
Sansa Clip isn't really sold anymore and I'm not sure if the new models are any good (Clip Jam, Clip Sport)

What would you recommend to use without overspending?

Just get a cheap Chinese mp3 player. Or, you know, start using a smartphone.

iPod Classic with SSD upgrade
>>
>>53136471
Super true.

I would recommend an older Galaxy, they can be had for cheap from use sites, they have expandable storage, you can throw cyanogen mod on them for great battery life and functionality as well as find an excellent music app. I have an S3 with a 64GB card in it that has CM12.1 in it and it works great. Long battery life, smooth operation and Poweramp has great equalizer settings.

Strongly recommend this route. (I even recommend an S3 but that's up to personal preference.)
>>
>>53136647
Yeah, I might eventually get some kind of smartphone, it just feels like an unnecessary purchase because I wouldn't be using it very much at all. All I really want is a way of listening to music when not at home.
>>
>>53136706
You... It's gonna live in airplane mode. You won't be using it for anything other than media consumption. You can torrent music on it, listen to it, then put it in your pocket. They are less than a hundred bucks on used sites. Expandable functionality. Don't think of it as a phone as much as an Android powered media device that can potentially have a mobile connection of you so choose.

>iPod Classic with SSD upgrade
This desu fampai. That's what I'm planning to do myself. I'm currently trying to get a "broken" one for free so I can fix it.

Clips are great but new ones don't support Rockbox and likely never will because they're shit, and old ones weren't exactly built to last, especially dat fucking jack, and now cost up to $100 used. At least ipods are tough and very widespread, and they support Rockbox.

It's either that, or try your luck with Chinese players, or fall for the audiophile meme.
>>
>>53136959
I wouldn't call myself an audiophile, but have some music in FLAC and enjoy good sound quality.
An Apple iPod seems like a decent option right now. The 7th gen ones seem a little too expensive and unnecessary, so I'll get an older one cheap maybe.

The DACs in the new iPods suck.
Get a 5/5.5g, they're cheap and easily "rockboxable".
They have wolfson DACs inside. They're pretty rad DACs.
>>
New Sansa stuff can't be rock boxed. You really have to track down the older stuff, which is going for scalper prices now.

I've always found android awful for music, the volume levels are all over the place.

Most of the music apps I've used don't even handle gapless files properly. Plus the interfaces are pretty but not functional for large libraries.

xDuoo is the modern day replacement for clipp. Google it up, I don't know if you can get it from somewhere else than directly from chinks though.
>>
>>53140048
Are those rockable? Also, X2 looks like a Clip knock-off.
>>
>>53140124
Nope but chinks make software upgrades for those so there is that. Besides xDuoo software isn't even bad enough to need to be rockboxed. clipp was fucking garbage software wise which is why rockbox was the only choice.
It's a chink player, obviously it will look like a knock-off. It has few faults but it's very solid player for cheap otherwise. It has actually pretty decent amp for such a small thing too.
>>
>>53140184
>clipp was fucking garbage software wise which is why rockbox was the only choice.
Huh? The original clip+ soft is pretty decent.
>>
>>53136442
Just here to confirm the new models are indeed shit

It's amazing how companies manage to squeeze everything for profit so much technology literally evolves backwards with them
>>
>>53140241
It depends on your idea of decent. For me it wasn't decent, it didn't play certain file types and I didn't like the UI. But to each their own I guess.
>>
I just bouhgt one of these: http://www.amazon.com/AGPtEK-G02-portable-Clip%C2%A0player-supporting/dp/B016ZZFWOC/ref=sr_1_8?s=mp3&ie=UTF8&qid=1456252880&sr=1-8&keywords=agptek

It's pretty good, takes about 5 seconds to boot up though.
>>
Buy a Craigslist iPod Touch, and replace the battery yourself if needed.

The interface is just miles better than anything else for music/podcasts/books.
>>
By the way, does anyone know if I can set rockbox to switch to the first song on the list and stop when the last file is played instead of clearing the now playing screen and saying there's "nothing to resume"? It's a bit annoying, and other players I've used were working like that.

Also, best theme?

The Plenue D isn't even that pricey, and might just be the best one.

>>53136647
There are better players out there than poweramp as far as the equalization goes.
There's also V4A, which is system wide. There's the lame stock EQ, and the more unintuitive, but powerful convolver.
Android is a better platform for sound quality than whatever in-house design can be designed by a small company.

the main issue I have with Mp3 players is the lack of crossfeed/speaker emulation. to me it seems like such an elementary feature. i have very sensitive ears(autism, not joking) and hard panning is physically painful for me. the soundscape of listening on headphones also sounds "wrong" to me in most cases.

A screen allows you to browse through a music collection and pick whatever you want to listen at the moment.
>just eats battery
OLED screens don't use much energy and they are on for brief moments.
>allows an ingress point for water
Uh, huh? You know lots of devices with screens are IP68 certified?
>battery is the same size as the sansa clip players
Can't speak of latter models, but the clip+ has a 300mAh battery, which is almost twice the size of what you posted (160mAh). With rockbox, it lasts 17h, 70% more (17h vs 10h).

iirc those rockbox battery life tests are usually done without headphones plugged in, which would make quite a difference

rockbox dev here

try some of the latest builds, Mikhail's freq scaling patches have been applied which should increase battery life by about 50%. It opens the door to potentially doubling battery life (over 20 hours on a clip+) once voltage scaling is dialed in

I've got a clip+ with rockbox, and it most certainly can not take more than 8 hours of continuous playback. Not FLAC either, mp3, but I've got no idea about how many kbps.
