My opinion? He's a computational Savior who is pushing for a free and open ecosystem for all to enjoy and feel safe with. But he's a radical and takes shit way too far without taking into consideration the various circumstances people may be in. He's a guy who saw closed source software as a threat so he started his project.
His project became quite famous and as a leader, his ego became inflated.
However, none of his peers managed to build a kernel, the most important part of the project and the last one to make it complete.
Then a dude made a kernel for fun. Though a kernel is useless by itself, used with other software it makes a complete and usable OS.
The kernel became famous as it got associated with the softwares from RMS project and people took the habit of using the name "Linux" to refer to the Kernel and other software.
However, RMS's ego got shit angry, and keep telling that since we are using (free) stuff from his project, he gets to choose the name of the whole.
See, his ego is quite the problem with RMS. Though he sees closed software as a threat to freedom, his license FORCES you to SHARE EVERYTHING from your code if by chance you happen to use one software under his license.
As for now, he's mostly an old fat man who gets paid to go from university to university speaking about his past glory and correcting the audience when they refer as Linux to what he calls GNU/Linux.
Though he has not been relevant tech-wise for decades, his name got remembered due to his meme status.

The reason he wants people to call it GNU/Linux is because he wants people to know about GNU. Maybe get curios, research what it is and find out about free software. He didn't call it Stallmax (as Linus called it Linux).
He forces you to share only if you distribute your software. Companies don't have to share software they use internally.
The GNU GPL v3 is the only one that ensures freedom to the user.

I actually don't care that much about this whole licenses and I get confused with the implicated implications. I leave this stiff for lawyers.
Personally, I use what solution works the best. If I am indifferent between two results, I go for the opensource one.
For work, I don't care if the company I work for hides the source code as long as no-one take credits and benefits from my work that I didn't have.

RMS is basically a homeless loser who hasn't made any real contributions in the last 20 years. He is still super butthurt that Linux beet HURD (but hey, HURD just got basic sound support in 2016!) and basically tries to claim Linux because Linus used GCC and the GNU coreutils. I am in my mid twenties in a "I don't give a fuck anymore. Politicians are just speaking puppets" and I believe they keep the plebs busy with the various "Gate" and "Ahmed mohamed the clock bomb" so that plebs don't interfere with their stuff.
