Based Vive.

If they can keep shipping down to $50 im sold. Greedy little cunts Oculus stacked almost $200 on top of the rift for Aussies.

>claim to sell at cost
>shaft the international customer base with egregious 'tax' and 'shipping' which amounts to a higher price than simply importing from the states

And they are cucking everyone with practically no room scale or VR controllers on release. Still cant believe how much Oculus managed to spurn given their lead in the hype machine.

It is when it's marketed at kids. It would be a different story if marketing was jerking off about its applications in things like flight simulation, medical training, scientific visualization or CAD, but instead they're jerking off to gaymes to please a tiny egotistical subset of a market mostly dominated by teenagers, 20 somethings and other low-income consumers

EXPLAIN.
>>
>>53111535
Valve came up with a better and more ingenious design for tracking. It basically only needs to send the tracking data which is nothing since it only tracks the timing of lasers hitting the photo sensors on the headset.

With Oculus they went with the more obvious design and use cameras to track via IR. They need to send high resolution IR video to be processed for high quality tracking, they could probably have developed something that works in camera to only send the data but that would add even more to costs.

Wat. It uses 2 usb and 1 hdmi for video.

Also what are these other cables for if the vive only uses 1 usb?
>>
>>53111354
>implying it will ever hit shelves because its fucking sold out for the next year
>>
>>53111721
One is power, one is USB, and one is HDMI. It all goes into a single cable on the back. There's also another USB port there extra for accessories.

The 4 port requirement from Oculus is because it comes with the Xbox controller which needs a port. The other 3 is for two cameras and the headset itself assuming you get Touch.
>>
>>53111609
oculus is going for future applications in the visual solution they have

see: hand tracking, body tracking, object tracking

our software needs to catch up but in gen 2 I think oculus has valve beat as far as "features"

lighthouse can only do so much. everything else needs to be on the headset for valve.
>>
>>53111833
>I think oculus has valve beat as far as "features"

I don't think so. You'd be nuts to think Valve doesn't know this and isn't doing R&D for full body tracking. They have two years at least to see where the market goes in terms of development.

Oculus isn't going for IR because it's "future proof", it's because they already invested so heavily in it.
>>
Dead on arrival just like the Oculus, yes they will sell out at the start, so did the Zune, early tech always sells out.

Price point + $1500+ PC puts both Oculus and Rift both DoA.

Both of them needed to cut their losses and launch at $499 Market penetration is the most important thing for new tech.
>>
>>53111929
That $1500 quote includes the headset itself. A 4690k and 290/970 PC doesn't cost $1500. In 6 months when Polaris and Pascal is out and when this is actually available beyond pre-orders it will be even less.
>>
>>53111833
>lighthouse can only do so much
What do you mean by this?
I would say it's the other way around as lighthouse is infinitely scalable, the beacons just send out lasers , and you can track as many devices in their area as you can fit ie. two, three or four people all with headsets and controllers can be in the one area being tracked by just two lighthouse emitters.

Oh, well I remember seeing a tweet from someone working on the Vive (maybe Chet?) who posted about playing with the tiny receiver diodes that are on the Vive and controllers and referenced them being possible to use to track anything, so there is that.
I've used different kinds of camera/IR tracking, from the original EyeToy, to new and old Kinect and Leap Motion, and none of them have impressed me at all in their accuracy and consistency. Maybe there are breakthroughs to be made, but at this point I don't think that non-transmitter+receiver tracking is going to be that good.

I don't have a doubt that Valve will come up with some crazy way to track that blows minds somehow.

Have you tried the new Orion update for Leap Motion? Apparently it's massively improved. I'm eager to try it out myself. My motherboard needed to be RMA'd right before the update so stuck with a shitty laptop atm. Terrible timing, I finally had a reason to dust off my DK2.
>>
>>53112163
Not him but I have. Orion is great. It's like what you should have expected from Leap Motion back when you got it, but then realized it was shit. It's not shit anymore. It just works. With that said, it could still be better, and it won't replace motion controllers.
>>

I'll wait to see how retarded shipping price + GST is before committing. The rift totaled at 780USD equivalent in fakin straya cunt. And that is without the motion controllers.

Job sim and fantastic contraption seem mediocre. There were much better titles out there like budget cuts, hover junkers, and I expect you to die shit cunt.

Warthunder + hotas would be interesting in it but that just uses the HMD without motion controller support.

Arma 3 might be alright but using the keyboard will be suffering unless the chaperone system is good enough though that would break immersion defeating the purpose.

Neither of those games would be room scale however.

Man I would fucking KILL for a roomscale VR equivalent of space engineers with planets and motion controller support. A mech warrior style game would be fantastical as well.

Platformers might be good in VR as well despite being a seated experience, but I imagine it would be comfy to sit down and play some games every once in a while with traditional controller imput or motion controller than standing waggling around all day.

Nothing killer yet, perhaps in another year or two once all the big shots start pumping out higher budget titles. Or something novel comes out as devs become more acquainted with VR.
